Even though we are six full weeks away from Fall, people across America are getting Pumpkin Fever. If you are anything like me, you’re constantly searching for new ways to cram pumpkin down your cramhole. And what better time to do so than first thing in the morning!
Kellogg’s is the first mover amongst brand-name cereals, and I’m honestly shocked it took so long. We’ve had plenty of other opportunities to pumpkinize our breakfast before, with products such as oatmeal, yogurt, waffles, and English muffins. But the cold cereal aisle has been begging for some sweet pumpkin lovin’ too.
The new Kellogg’s Mini Wheats Pumpkin Spice make a whole lot of sense to me. Kellogg’s offers a Maple Brown Sugar Frosted Mini Wheats variety, and this Pumpkin Spice cousin falls right into that same category of flavors that are perfect for the fall. Not to mention that Mini Wheats already look like tiny little haystacks.
The ingredient list reveals that these Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats Pumpkin Spice derive their flavor from cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice. This is the pumpkin spice Grand Slam.
I popped a few of these into my mouth dry first. The pumpkin spice is authentic. It’s not too bold, but it’s pretty effective as the savory pumpkin spice blend strikes a good balance with the sweet sugary frosting on the Mini Wheats. Easily the best Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats variety for obvious pumpkin reasons.
Texturally, the shredded wheats feel like a perfect vehicle for capturing pumpkin spice flavor. This part worked really well for me.
Then I tried it with milk, like an adult. You know how adding milk to regular Frosted Mini Wheats makes the sugar pop? Well, this also happens here, but it significantly mutes the pumpkin spice blend. You have to trade off more sweetness for less pumpkin spices. I accept this tradeoff, because the sugar and frosting is what makes Frosted Mini Wheats shine. And after all… I live by the mantra that any pumpkin spice is better than no pumpkin spice.
Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats Pumpkin Spice is a quality product that’s super fun and just staring at the box gives me the warm and fuzzies. But if you’re strictly seeking pumpkin spices, you’re best off eating this out of a ziplock bag like a small child.
