If you’ve been following Junk Banter, I’ve pretty much eaten nothing but Oreos for the last week. If I want to live to see the next Oreo release (July), I better cut back on my Oreo consumption. And by “cut back,” I mean I better cut them in half and eat the new Chocolate Creme Oreo Thins & Lemon Creme Oreo Thins.

The closest I’ll ever be to dieting.

Oreo Thins were introduced in the summer of 2015 with three flavors: Original, Golden, & Mint. I didn’t understand what all the buzz was about. “WTF are these, Oreo crackers?” Since nothing is wrong with regular Oreos, I was a bit puzzled with the release of Oreo Thins.

Nabisco is clear to point out that they aren’t meant to be “Diet Oreos.” They market Oreo Thins as “thin & crispy sandwich cookies” that are meant to be a more adult method of snacking on the classic Oreo cookie. I usually eat like an obese child, so I might not be the target demographic for Oreo Thins. But with the release of the new Chocolate Creme Oreo Thins & Lemon Creme Oreo Thins, I’m finally ready to give them a shot because new Oreos!

Kind of.

First up is the Chocolate Creme Oreo Thin. I’ve been so caught up in the web of limited edition Oreos that I don’t remember the last time I had a Chocolate Creme Oreo. If my Cookie Math is accurate, you can eat twice as many Chocolate Creme Oreo Thins as you can a regular Chocolate Creme Oreo, and then a tiny bite of a third before you hit the recommended serving size.

Let me address the Thin angle first: I dig it more than I thought I would. If you’re the type of person who likes the delicate snap of a cracker but wishes they tasted more like cookies, Oreo Thins are the product for you.

The Chocolate Creme Oreo Thin tastes identical to the Chocolate Creme Oreo. Supposedly the wafer-to-creme ratio is identical to the thicker version, and the taste suggests such. This means your affinity towards this product will come down to a few simple things: 1) Your affinity to Chocolate Creme Oreos, 2) Your preference for a crispier cookie, and 3) Your preference to eat as many cookies as possible at the same caloric penalty.

With regards to taste, I think Chocolate Oreo Thins work effectively. The creme is sweeter than the wafers, and it carries a milk chocolate/chocolate milk flavor while the wafers trend towards a more bitter, more genuine cocoa flavor. The result is a chocolate-on-chocolate flavor that feels balanced and not redundant. But I enjoy a little more variety in my cookies, so I’d opt for the original creme Oreo over these on most days.

Nabisco Lemon Creme Oreo Thins

Next up are Lemon Creme Oreo Thins. Defying all laws of fruit and chocolate, the Lemon Creme Oreo Thins have 10 more calories per serving than the Chocolate Creme Oreo Thin, running you 150 calories for 4 cookies. With this cookie, the lead flavor is the sweeter Golden wafer, what with all its buttery, shortbready, vanilla qualities you’re quite familiar with. Shortly thereafter, the lemon bursts through.

This lemon creme is bright, citrusy, and refreshing. The creme is sweeter than it is tart, but there is a pleasant sourness that finishes each bite. It’s way less sour than the Key Lime Pie Oreos, which is why I like the Lemon Creme Oreo Thins more than those. They’re highly snackable and never off-putting.

But did I like the Lemon Creme Oreo Thins more than the Chocolate Creme? I did, actually. The Oreo Thin experience is all about sophistication, and a light lemon cookie feels like I’m adulting pretty hard. Really there is no reason to compare these two: you might want fruit one day and chocolate the following fifty. But I like the Lemon Creme Oreo Thin experience more than the standard Lemon Oreo, because I feel proud on those rare occurrences I resemble an adult. Nod goes to lemon.
