Forget the artisan breads, stinky cheeses, and fancy aiolis. The PB&J is and will always be the King of the Sandwich. Sure, we can argue strawberry jam vs. grape jelly vs. raspberry preserves for years, but the PB&J reigns supreme no matter which way you slice it. Except if you slice the crust off, because that’s just dumb.
If you’re like anyone who is anyone, you grew up with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches wrapped up in tinfoil inside your lunchbox for years. The only thing that got me through 3rd grade mathematics was counting the minutes until I could enjoy my perfect little peanut butter & jelly sandwich at lunch. Except there’s only one problem. Years and years of having the world’s greatest mother prepare my peanut butter & jelly sandwiches has rendered me too lazy to make my own, so I just never eat them. It’s the same reason I rarely make Pillsbury Toaster Strudel. If I wanted to apply my own icing, I would have went to culinary arts school.
At least with the new Pillsbury Peanut Butter and Strawberry Toaster Strudel, I’ll get to kill two birds with one stone:
Pillsbury Peanut Butter & Strawberry Toaster Strudel
Even though I’m pretty sure S’mores Toaster Strudel just came out, Pillsbury Peanut Butter and Strawberry Toaster Strudel are the latest limited edition flavor to pop up on shelves. It’s a brand new attempt for Pillsbury, as this limited edition makes its first ever appearance in the line. Shouldn’t be too hard, right? Pillsbury already makes Strawberry Toaster Strudel, so the addition of peanut butter is a pretty lazy way to make us all very, very excited.
Err, I should be more specific. What we have here is a peanut butter flavored icing and not actual peanut butter. Good luck finding the word “peanut” anywhere on the ingredient list of the Pillsbury Peanut Butter and Strawberry Toaster Strudel, because you won’t. I sampled some while mine toasted, and I’m not too impressed. The icing seems thicker than some other Toaster Strudel offerings, but still nowhere near as thick as peanut butter. There is a deep & earthy roasted nut flavor, but its artificial nature is glaring. This tastes like peanut butter in the same way that a peanut butter flavored jelly bean tastes like peanut butter. There’s an off-putting tang that just doesn’t belong.

Thankfully, the other components of Pillsbury Peanut Butter & Strawberry Toaster Strudel will help mitigate this issue a bit. The Pillsbury Toaster Strudel dough has a bold, buttery flavor – a lot more exciting than white bread. It’s kind of like any fried dough product, such as funnel cake. Greasy fried dough is one of my favorite food groups, so I’m very fond of the pastry itself.
The strawberry filling, which uses real strawberry puree, is not too far off from a jar of fresh strawberry preserves. It’s bursting with mostly sweet, slightly tart flavor that is easily the best component of the pastry. The filling’s authenticity goes a long way towards covering up the insincerity of the peanut butter icing. Pro Tip: Let your icing melt completely and spread it evenly across the Toaster Strudel. If you get too much icing in one bite, its insincerity surfaces. A balanced bite will be an imperfect yet still tasty interpretation of the King of the Sandwich.
I know what you’re probably thinking by now. Why not just spread peanut butter across the Pillsbury Strawberry Toaster Strudel that they sell year round, you lazy ass? I could do that, or I could use two Pillsbury Peanut Butter & Strawberry Toaster Strudels as the bread for my peanut butter & jelly sandwich:
An improvement to the experience; a degradation of my health.
In summary, please stop letting me do things like this.

Have you ever added anything special to your PB&J’s? My friend used to add sugar onto her Peanut Butter sandwiches (as if there wasn’t enough on it). I like having buttery toast and then adding the PB&J
Cinnamon for me! It’s nothing too crazy but I will add it every time if I have it on hand. Or just my favorite cinnamon raisin peanut butter from Peanut Butter & Co. Buttery toast? Hard to go wrong with that, ever.
An aside…how the heck has there not been an Oreo PBJ-flavored?
They are going to do a 4th effort at a garbage apple version instead. Think, Oreo, think!
