Oh you’ve gotta be KIDDING me…
Ben & Jerry’s Coconut Seven Layer Bar has been a Scoop Shop exclusive flavor and is some of the best product they produce. Ben & Jerry’s Non-Dairy ice cream, however, is not their best.
Look, I know vegans are probably doing backflips over their tofu that they got an exclusive flavor. And honestly, I’m happy for them too… they can’t eat like, anything. But I don’t live near a Scoop Shop and can’t get the real stuff often. It took me a vacation to Pittsburgh to finally try it, and though I may have had the drunk munchies when I inhaled it, I’ve been praying for a pint version ever since.
I think I prayed wrong or something.
I’ve reviewed a couple of Ben & Jerry’s Non-Dairy flavors and my conclusion was this: almond milk is far from a perfect substitute. The ice cream is “thin” and feels a little empty, despite having just as many calories, grams of fat, and sugar as popular dairy flavors.
Thankfully, there’s so much shit going in Ben & Jerry’s Coconut Seven Layer Bar that it distracts from the non-dairy ice cream’s shortcomings. It features coconut non-dairy frozen dessert with fudge chunks, walnuts, swirls of graham cracker, and swirls of caramel.
The coconut non-dairy ice cream is sweet with medium coconutty-ness. It’s not as bold as the sweet cream coconut ice cream in Coconuts for Caramel Core, nor does it have huge coconut flakes, but it’s bright and refreshing regardless. It’s easily the best of the non-dairy bases I’ve tried thus far.
And things only get better from there.
Every spoonful of Ben & Jerry’s Coconut Seven Layer Bar offers something interesting and delicious. The fudge chunks don’t suffer much from the lack of dairy. They have genuine chocolate flavor with a sweetness somewhere between semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate. The caramel tastes buttery despite having no butter, and thankfully walnuts were already vegan. My favorite bites were the ones that contained graham cracker. They’re coarsely chopped but you can detect notes of their presence here and there. I only wish they had been represented a little harder.
There’s no doubt in my mind that the non-dairy Coconut Seven Layer Bar is the best in the line. The combination of coconut, chocolate, and walnuts had me thinking about Almond Joys (Walnut Joys?), so imagine covering that in caramel and serving it on a graham cracker. The mix-in density is high and helped me overlook the thinner texture of the almond milk base. If you’re vegan or lactose intolerant, this is the one you want to pick up the next time you’re out shopping for kombucha or whatever.
Now will somebody please put some f*cking dairy in here?
