Quick Bites are rapid-fire reviews without the lame story – just the important points.
Today’s quick bite is:
Lay’s Poppables (White Cheddar, Sea Salt, Honey BBQ)
Lay’s Creamy Jalapeño Poppables
Lay’s Sea Salt & Vinegar Poppables
Frito Lay describes Lay’s Poppables as “perfectly poppable crispy potato bites.” The initial launch brought with it two flavors – a classic Sea Salt and a cheesy White Cheddar – and a year later brought Honey BBQ, and eventually Creamy Jalapeno.
The shape and texture of these things is what makes them so appealing to me – they’re super puffy potato snacks that are immensely satisfying to crunch on.
Additionally, you can eat close to 30 chips in a 150 calorie serving. Pop ’til you drop or something like that.
White Cheddar
Lay’s Poppables White Cheddar is definitely the more flavorful of the two debut flavors. The white cheddar is more accurately a blend of cheddar cheese and romano cheese, and there is some light onion and garlic flavor poking through. They bring us all hope that 3D Doritos will one day return, as they were some of the greatest snacking known to man.

Sea Salt
Lay’s Poppables Sea Salt is a much more simple and straightforward flavor but I still enjoy them. They have a good salty & greasy flavor without actually being too greasy, if that makes any sense. Personally I like when my potato chips still taste like potatoes.
It’s the texture that elevates these – they’re like lattice-cut orbs of potato science.

Honey BBQ
Lay’s Poppables Honey BBQ are absolutely BOMB. The seasoning is easily the most flavorful one yet – a little sweetness from the honey and brown sugar, a little depth from the spices and garlic powder, and overall just that familiar barbecue chip seasoning that’s become a mainstay for Lay’s, and in your household through the years.
My favorite so far.

Creamy Jalapeno
It was only right that we got at least one spicy flavor, and Lay’s graced us with something much better than that.
Lay’s Creamy Jalapeño combines the spicy kick of fresh jalapeño with the creamy deliciousness of sour cream & onion. The creamy components do their job admirably as the heat remains mild, but the jalapeño’s flavor is unmistakable and the combination is delightful. There’s also the garden fresh flavor of bell peppers layered underneath with a little garlic.
Add that supersonic, colossal crunch? These are a big-time Buy, baby.

Sea Salt & Vinegar
This is another flavor that makes so much sense for a potato vehicle like Poppables: lightly flavored with simple ingredients. Basically all you have here is the Sea Salt Poppables with a splash of vinegar, producing the familiar combination of salt & vinegar you grew up with in normal potato chips.
While salt & vinegar is a wildly popular flavor, it’s one that you either LOVE or can’t stand at all. I think Lay’s has the right balance by not going overboard with the vinegar, and these Sea Salt & Vinegar Poppables follow suit. Incredibly addicting.

Burning Questions:
- Are they better than 3D Doritos? LOL, no.
- Why did they discontinue 3D Doritos? Probably something you did wrong.
- Will they bring back 3D Doritos? Please.

I felt like these were not as filling or satisfying as regular chips. I probably ate a whole bag, and went “welp. I ate a whole bag and I still have room for more. what now?” But I agree with your review. Good, but the downfall to me is the “filling” factor.
I feel you on that. I do like the light snacking option though since I’m not usually turning to chips to get full. But they are not a hearty snack by any means.
Recommendation: beat the heck out of the bag to make crumbs of these and go dump truck style. They are outstanding with the texture combined with that. Delightful..
I just picked up the white cheddar ones, based on this review, and I love them! Thanks for the review 🙂
A happy ending! Haha so glad this was helpful and it lived up to your expectations. Thanks for reading!
Have you reviewed Philadelphia Cheesecake Cups yet? I have a love for junk food myself and haven’t seen many reviews for those yet. 🙂
