Well, well, well…. look what’s trying to ruin popcorn now.
Trader Joe’s Candy Corn Popcorn
“Crunchy Kernels of Popcorn Covered in a Sweet Coating That Tastes Like Candy Corn”.
Barf!
So why on Earth would I buy candy corn popcorn when I don’t enjoy candy corn? Well it’s simple: 1) Trader Joe’s makes it, and 2) it’s popcorn. Two out of three is good enough for me.
And maybe (hopefully), it won’t even taste like candy corn!
Listen to Trader Joe’s hype this shit:
Here’s the trick to this Halloween treat: we start with freshly popped, fluffy kernels of popcorn, give them a spirited sprinkling of salt, and then coat them in a sweet and crunch candy shell. What materializes is a snack that uncannily evokes the classic flavor of candy corn, that it’s almost… spooky. Almost.
What’s spooky to me is how anyone likes candy corn.
There’s good news and better news. First, it doesn’t taste all that much like candy corn, and second… it actually tastes quite good.
Texturally, Trader Joe’s Candy Corn Popcorn is very satisfying with very large and very crunchy pieces all throughout. There are three colors: yellow, orange, and off-white, which is a fun visual representation of the classic candy that I can’t stand. All three taste identical (as they should).
The best way I can describe the taste is a hybrid between traditional kettle corn and a caramel corn, but without the distinct buttery flavor present in the caramel corn. This is a straight-up, syrupy sweet popcorn without the gross waxiness of candy corn and just the right amount of salt to keep it balanced and incredibly addictive.
If you’re a fan of any of Angie’s Boom Chickapop holiday flavors – including the Candy Corn one – you should find yourself really enjoying this. Instead of a light drizzle providing all the specialty flavor, this stuff is just completely coated in glaze so each piece is bursting with flavor.
Candy corn may be the Devil’s trash, but Trader Joe’s Candy Corn is very good.
Burning Questions:
- Isn’t candy corn just sugar anyway? Shitty sugar.
- So this is just really sugary popcorn? Pretty much.
- And it’s really that good? YES IT’S SUGARY POPCORN.
