If you could travel the world and eat exotic, regionally-inspired M&M’s in each place you visited, which countries would you choose?
Well you don’t get to choose; the countries are Mexico, England and Thailand.
M&M’s Flavor Vote 2019
Mars has brought back its popular Flavor Vote competition, and this time they’ve put an international spin on it. The three flavors, all Peanut M&M varieties, are:
- Mexican Jalapeño Peanut M&M’s
- English Toffee Peanut M&M’s
- Thai Coconut Peanut M&M’s
For this year’s contest, Mars is basically bribing us to take action. Simply cast your vote through the Flavor Vote Website or text “Vote” to 84444 and you’ll be entered to win a trip to all three countries.
Not a bad deal for eating some candy that I was going to buy anyway.
My bags are already packed (a sombrero, a power adapter, bug spray, and a stomach pump), so let’s get right into the flavors.
This review is part one of a three-part series:
Mexican Jalapeño Peanut M&M’s
According to Mars, Mexican Jalapeño Peanut M&M’s have “just the right amount of spice and chocolate,” which in Spanish translates to: ¿Dónde está el baño?
Rejected flavors include Guacamole Peanut M&M’s, Arroz Con Pollo Peanut M&M’s, and Doritos Locos Taco Peanut M&M’s.
Now if we rewind all the way back to the 2016 Vote for Your Favorite Peanut flavor vote that saw Coffee Nut M&M’s becoming a permanent flavor, we briefly got to try Chili Nut M&M’s. I strongly disliked them, though admittedly I was never a big fan of the chocolate + spice combo in my candy.
Unlike the Chili Nut M&M’s that included chili extract and spice, these Mexican Jalapeño Peanut M&M’s only list artificial and natural flavors. Yet somehow, the spice flavoring does indeed have more of a jalapeño flavor than a chili one. It has a very “fresh” heat that tastes a little like something you might pull from a garden – if the garden was housed inside of a chocolate factory.
But that’s about all the positive I really have to say about Mexican Jalapeno Peanut M&M’s, because I’m still not down with the spiced chocolate craze. After that little burst of jalapeño freshness, it goes through the normal cycles of milk chocolate and peanut flavors hitting your taste buds, and then random spice surfaces late. It’s not an intense heat though – much more mild than I remember Chili Nut. But it still tastes like a disjointed novelty act to me.
I will text “F*ck the jalapeno ones” to 84444.
Burning Questions:
- What happened when you texted it? They didn’t respond.
- Does anyone ever respond to your texts? Sometimes.
- Anyone that’s not your Mom? …she’s not one of the people that responds.
