You’ve got yourself a nice, big ole’ glass of pink lemonade – the only drink appropriate for this kind of day. Chores are done. Work doesn’t exist – not today, at least. Carpe diem. Life could not be any better at this very moment.

Or could it? What if your pink lemonade tasted better than it already did? How would that even be possible, seeing as yours is already 90% sugar? Have you considered running it through a few cycles in the toaster to unleash more flavor? Could I write an entire paragraph strictly by poising questions to the reader, when the joke is on me and I don’t have any? Introducing Kellogg’s Frosted Pink Lemonade Pop Tarts!

Kellogg’s Frosted Pink Lemonade Pop Tarts

Kellogg’s announced these pink beauties last year, but nobody knew because they never made it past the words “Maple Bacon.” Kellogg’s Frosted Pink Lemonade Pop Tarts, therefore, will surely come as a surprise to many. A drink, in a toaster pastry. What are we doing? The ingredient list is your standard Kellogg’s Pop Tart array of whatever the hell, and the only fruit included here are dried apples – an ingredient present in more Pop Tarts than you might expect.

Untoasted, Kellogg’s Frosted Pink Lemonade Pop Tarts are nothing to be afraid of. That’s because they taste an awful lot like Kellogg’s Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts upon first bite. The Pop Tart pastry is floury and mostly bland per the norm, with minor traces of salt. This floury flavor makes any finer nuances of the pink lemonade filling difficult to pick up on as you chew through it. On the back end, you’ll be treated to a light smack of lemon after the fact. I was expecting a lot more tang and a decent bit of sour, but the experience is mostly sweet and fruity. These are qualities you would find in lemonade, but the pastry interferes more than I’d like it to. So let’s put lemonade in the toaster and hope Mom doesn’t ground us for two weeks.

Just like with every other Pop Tart, toasting brings the pastry dough to life. Toasting dials back that floury element and adds a finer, buttery backdrop with heightened saltiness. This works absolute wonders for the Kellogg’s Frosted Pink Lemonade Pop Tart. The filling becomes a lot more acidic and lemony, perhaps because it is just painted on a better canvas. That strawberry flavor is still there, but the balance shifts significantly in favor of the lemon. Not kidding, guys. Toasting unlocks the lemonade, and the flavor just works. It’s not as sour as a glass of Country Time Pink Lemonade, but a toasted Pink Lemonade Pop Tart has all the qualities of the beverage.

While it had all the makings of a disappointment, Kellogg’s Frosted Pink Lemonade Pop Tarts are surprisingly enjoyable and a suitable spring seasonal. If your reference point was the Frosted Watermelon Pop Tarts, these feel like a more natural fit and are convincingly better in my book. My recommendation – buy, but only if you plan on toasting them. Definitely buy if you play on getting toasty yourself.
