I will admit freely that politics is not my thing. I’m not here to discuss it nor are you here to read about it. The kind of elections I get most excited about are the ones where you get to vote for new Oreos, which is something you can actually do right now.
Ben & Jerry, however, are campaigning that you go out and exercise your right to vote by actually voting, and you should. Here’s what they had to say when they introduced the newest limited batch flavor: Ben & Jerry’s Empowermint:
The only statement I will make regarding politics is this: America is the greatest nation in the world and I intend to eat everything in it.
Ben & Jerry’s Empowermint features peppermint ice cream with fudge brownies and a fudge swirl. Democracy is peppermint, apparently. When I found it, I had but a single, non-partisan thought: “I plan to eat this.”
The recipe sounds extremely straightforward, but I’m still excited. I’ve already talked about how much I love the Greyston brownies when I reviewed Ben & Jerry’s Brownie Batter Core, so I will just summarize with this: They’re one of the company’s best mix-ins. Hard to be mad about a fudge swirl, too. Their peppermint base ice cream is currently featured in Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie, but I’ve always walked right past the flavor. Their peppermint ice cream will be a first for me.
The description might sound a little boring, but the food porn it provides is not:
I made a concerted effort to concentrate on the peppermint ice cream by itself. We’re not exactly moving mountains here, but you know what? This base has a lot more flavor than most of the company’s offerings, and it’s a really great one. The mint doesn’t overpower like the name might imply, but it’s robust and refreshing. It’s basically just a super smooth and flavorful mint ice cream without too much bite. Kind of perfect actually, as far as mint goes.
I knew this review wasn’t going to be very exciting.
Brownie chunks are huge in Ben & Jerry’s Empowermint ice cream. I’ve used all the words to describe them before: dense, chewy, fudgey, and huge. The photo above may not do it justice but their abundance is also on point as well. There are actually two Mother F’ers hidden somewhere in that spoon. A cool minty backdrop is a fine complement for chocolately brownies, in case you didn’t hear that mint and chocolate go well together. The fudge swirl does its part successfully. It’s a sweeter chocolate than the brownies, but ultimately it’s just more chocolate.
Note that “more chocolate” has never been a problem in the history of the world. This is some good shit.
The only criticism I can offer is that this pint could use some crunch. Mint and chocolate usually come via a mint chocolate chip or peppermint bark when in ice cream form. I’m all for Empowermint, but I wish Ben & Jerry’s just went HAM and littered the whole damn thing with chocolate chips to break up all the chewy elements. Or maybe the mint chocolate cookie balls in Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Peppermint Crunch. Or both. All of it.
That being said, it is somewhat novel to replace chocolate chips in the traditional mint chocolate chip recipe with God-damned perfect brownies.
In summary, exercise your right to get fat by buying this flavor immediately.
