Can you say “Nutella M&M’s”?!
Well legally they can’t because Nutella is a brand name owned by Italian company Ferrero, but the important thing is that Mars just jammed some hazelnut spread inside of M&M’s!
Ever since Mars figured out that injecting chocolate with gooey caramel was a good idea two years ago, hungry fans like me have salivated over the possibilities:
Nutella, cookie butter… Nutella…
Ok so we’re not a very creative bunch, but make no mistake about it: Mar’s second foray into new fillings is coming straight out of the diaries of millions of Americans, Italians, Italian-Americans, and… hell, just fat Americans of all nationalities.
Or I guess I just covered that with the “Americans.”
The new Hazelnut Spread M&M’s come in all the standard colors and have the same rounder, thicker American-sized shape of the Peanut Butter M&M’s.
As I bit into them, I was pleased with the amount of hazelnut flavor that powered through the familiar candy coating and milk chocolate. And then it dawned on me:
Nobody can call these Nutella M&M’s, because it’s not a chocolate hazelnut spread inside.
What we have here is a thick, semi-creamy hazelnut paste made from hazelnut flour. The color will back what taste confirms: there’s no chocolate component to the spread itself. What’s here is good as the M&M’s remind me of another chocolatey, hazelnutty confection in the Ferrero family: the Ferrero Rocher. These are like bite-sized versions trapped inside a crisp candy coating, absent the spiky outside and hazelnut crunch at its core.
Solid as they are, I’m still feeling a bit duped here. The package shows the Blue M&M sporting a dark brown chocolate hazelnut spread that mimics Nutella, but that’s not quite what you get inside.
Guess I’m not crossing off Nutella M&M’s in MY diary just yet…

What a bummer! It was a great idea for a flavor.
I’m ok with the hazelnuty spread, because it reminds me of the Best Candy of All Time: Kinder Hippos ?
