Caramel and Chocolate and Cheesecake, OH MY! ?
We haven’t seen Ben & Jerry’s employ this kind of wizardry to its ice cream in quite some time. They’ve got a trio of new truffle-centric ice creams to ring in 2018 – crushing New Year’s Resolutions around the country – and this one right here has got to be the most magical.
Or at the very least, the most fattening.
Listen to this shit: Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Chocolate Cheesecake Truffles is caramel cheesecake ice cream, with graham cracker covered cheesecake truffles, and chocolate cookie swirls. I could literally feel my fingers getting fatter typing that out.
I can also feel my heart trying to beat faster, but it’s almost as if it’s clogged with cheesecake.
I’ve been critical of Ben & Jerry’s plain cheesecake-flavored ice cream before for not being cheese-y nor tangy enough to emulate cheesecake; I find its flavor lands somewhere between “vanilla” and “nonexistent.” But you know what? Blending it with caramel was an incredibly smart pairing that elevates it. Perhaps the extra sweetness from the caramel reveals the subtleties, as a cream cheese flavor pushes through in this iteration.
In Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Chocolate Cheesecake Truffles, both the caramel and the cheesecake flavors are smooth, mild, and play well in tandem – I didn’t find myself wanting one of more in favor of the other. The ratios are real solid, but keeping it in perspective: something like the coffee-caramel base in the last release (One Sweet World) was a much bolder flavor. Appreciate this one for its balance.
Besides… the mix-ins are a playground of flavors designed to shine.
The chocolate cookie swirl is everywhere, but the ribbon can run thin at times. It adds a chocolate Oreo-type flavor to the background of each bite, and I found it complemented the cheesecake nicely while distracting slightly from the caramel. A partial likeness to an Oreo Cheesecake presents itself, though I don’t want to oversell the comparison.
When I read the description, “graham-covered cheesecake truffles” had me feeling some kind of way. But I find myself just pleased instead of blown away like I wanted to be. The truffles legit taste like balls of cream cheese – successfully driving the cheesecake theme home even harder. Where they suffer some is the graham cracker coating, because it sheds from many of the truffles and gets a little lost in the base.
I think a full-fledged, thick graham-cracker swirl throughout the pint would have done wonders.
Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Chocolate Cheesecake Truffles is far from a letdown; it’s their best cheesecake flavored ice cream to date at the very least. But other than that, it’s just a fattening concoction of fattening things more than it is a masterpiece.
And as fattening as those things are, I somehow wanted more cookies and graham crackers….
Really makes you wonder what that says about you.
