Malt-O-Meal Cold Stone Creamery Our Strawberry Blonde Cereal
Malt-O-Meal has released not one, but TWO Cold Stone Creamery inspired breakfast cereals – a Birthday Cake Remix flavor (review here) and this here Our Strawberry Blonde one.
Here’s the description from Malt-O-Meal, as if anything mattered past the words “Cold Stone”:
Our Strawberry Blonde™ cereal puts a trio of classic flavors right in your breakfast bowl: Strawberry Ice Cream flavored Puffs, toasted Honey Graham Squares, and tasty Marshmallow Bits. Don’t be fooled – it’s not ice cream and it’s not strawberry pie, but a ready-to-eat breakfast treat.
I’m pretty sure the 2 lb. bag was a dead giveaway that it wasn’t ice cream or pie or strawberry pie.
I must admit that I’ve never had Cold Stone’s Our Strawberry Blonde™ sundae because I’m usually distracted by the Oreos, brownies, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and this Cookie Dough Cake whenever I walk in. But the sundae version consists of strawberry ice cream, graham cracker pie crust, caramel, and whipped cream.
The Malt-O-Meal Our Strawberry Blonde™ cereal was a pretty clever mix of regular cereal offerings to get there, with the strawberry puffs representing the ice cream, the graham squares representing the graham pie crust, and the marshmallows representing the whipped topping.
I guess omitting caramel is their attempt at including some nutrition.
Now thankfully, these “regular cereal offerings” are all quite good – especially the strawberry ice cream flavored puffs. There’s a big and bright strawberry flavor that’s plenty sweet and is tasty by itself. It’s that candied artificial strawberry flavor, but not one of those overtly artificial and medicinal ones. The cereal contains more strawberry puffs than anything else and the taste echoes this fact. It’s probably not fair to call it strawberry ice cream, but it’s not your standard strawberry cereal either.
Quite good.
The rest of this cereal is the Post Honey Maid S’mores Cereal without the chocolate puffs (Malt-O-Meal’s parent company is Post, FYI). It has less of the Honey Graham Squares by a wide margin, but this allows you to appreciate the new strawberry cereal as well as its unique combination with graham cereal. I actually love this mix, and the marshmallows are adding as much “whipped cream” as you could expect from a cereal add-in. Plus, cereal marshmallows improve 100% of all cereals.
Milk enhances this one – especially from an ice cream standpoint – just as it did in Birthday Cake Remix™. It’s the unconventional yet imaginative mix of ingredients in Our Strawberry Blonde™ that make it more appealing to me, which is important when you’re procuring cereal from bags the same size as the ones they sell dog food in at Costco.
With two hits on the Cold Stone line, I can’t wait to see which chain restaurants Malt-O-Meal bags up next.
