When it comes to ice cream, I don’t suffer from the problem that plagues most Americans. You know, the one where you take a pint of ice cream from your freezer, bring it to the couch, and it vanishes in a cloud of delight, shame, and regret.
Poof.
You see, it’s one thing I don’t typically overindulge in. I have a freezer overflowing with it, but I like to reserve it for a few spoonfuls after dinner to satisfy my sweet tooth. Even though I eat a LOT of different ice cream, to me it’s the perfect way to finish a meal and a little bit goes a long way.
You know what I do overindulge in on occasion? Alcohol, and soon my ice cream strategy falls by the wayside. With my inhibitions thrown out the window, I have crushed many a pint of ice cream – some of which I remember, and some of which I only learn of from the empty carton serving as evidence in my garbage can (and once in my bed).
Häagen-Dazs new Spirits Collection appeals to me for a lot of reasons…
Two birds, one stone, zero f*cks given.
This review is part of a series. Today’s Häagen-Dazs Spirits is:
Häagen-Dazs Spirits Tres Leches Cake
So what is Tres Leches cake? It’s a popular cake in Mexico and Latin America that is basically a sponge cake which has been soaked in THREE milks, and sometimes rum because they really know how to party down there. The three milks are whole milk, sweetened condensed, and evaporated.
The description from Häagen-Dazs is white rum infused ice cream with thick ribbons of dulce de leche and chunks of Tres Leches cake.
They had me at rum, and then also every other word they said.
If you’re one of those people that can’t stand rum, then you should probably avoid this ice cream like the plague. It’s not too strong for anyone with a general affinity towards booze, but it’s prevalent enough that if its mere presence will cause you to gag, you’ll definitely have an aversion to this ice cream.
Personally I enjoy rum, and I very much enjoy this base. It’s creamy and sweet and its primary flavor is as advertised with smooth-yet-prominent white rum notes. Makes me wonder why I don’t use ice cream as a mixer with my rum more often.
The dulce de leche swirl, however, is lacking in potency. They bill it as thick but I don’t find any segments of swirl that significantly impacted the overall flavor, other than some fleeting salty notes strewn about here and there. It really feels like this flavor would have been elevated to the next level if a big ole salty, buttery swirl broke up all the white rum.
Now there WAS a good amount of cake pieces, and they have a great chew that’s very satisfying to eat. I do have to say that they taste like most other vanilla or yellow cake mix-ins you find in ice cream; the tres leches nuances are mostly lost on me. But whatever is here is value-added because I got excited and delighted whenever I found them, and I didn’t have to search for long before stumbling upon another.
Great job Häagen-Dazs with the booze; a little missed opportunity with the swirl.
This is why you don’t make dulce de leche while drunk.
Burning Questions:
- Which one of the leches is your favorite? The most fattening one.
- Favorite type of rum? The one that gets me drunkest.
- Favorite type of shot? Whatever’s free.
