If you ask me (you didn’t), the best thing about a Reese’s is that they’ve perfected the balance of crisp chocolate and sweet peanut butter. But every once in a while, some jamoke contests that there should be more peanut butter or (and I can’t believe I’m about to say this…) LESS peanut butter. Imagine that?

Well, if you’re one of those people, now you can put your money where your mouth is and put your mouth where these new Reese’s are.

Reese’ Chocolate Lovers and Reese’s Peanut Butter Lovers are here for a limited time. The former has more peanut butter; the latter favors chocolate. Let the debate on the ideal ratio begin now.

It’s all a moot point anyway; Reese’s Eggs have (and always will have) the best ratio. But in the interest of “There’s No Wrong Way to Eat a Reese’s™,” let’s eat some damn Reese’s.

Reese’s Chocolate Lovers

Now I know what you must be thinking, based on the picture: Isn’t this just a normal Reese’s Cup…?” 

Think again, Bozo!

According to the company, Reese’s Chocolate Lovers uses a thicker chocolate shell, and it’s a richer, slightly darker milk chocolate that is “more chocolate than we’ve ever packed into a Reese’s Cup.” But can you actually taste any difference?

A well-studied, well-travelled palate like mine can. This chocolate tastes less sweet and dare I say it seems like a higher quality milk chocolate than the original. It’s about halfway between the standard milk chocolate Reese’s Cup and the Dark Chocolate Reese’s in terms of darkness (or milkness, if you’re thinking about it in reverse). It’s delicious, and not so dark that their signature peanut butter’s flavor is compromised.

Better than a regular Reese’s? A matter of preference, but not to me.

Because a regular Reese’s is perfect as is.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Lovers

Reese’s Peanut Butter Lovers is the more interesting one because the top portion of the shell has been replaced with a peanut butter confection.

This one is similarly delicious, but is far more different compared to a regular Reese’s than the Chocolate Lover’s is. Essentially, the entire cup tastes like the inside of a Reese’s with the same texture as a normal cup – crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. The salty-sweet balance is on point, yet it’s so peanut buttery than I fail to taste much – if any – chocolate at all.

I’m sure this news will come to the delight of many, and I do enjoy this variation. But personally? A Reese’s cup without proper chocolate is not a proper Reese’s.

I still devoured these, because they’re still amazing.
