Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Churro Pop Tarts
Times are rough right now, but the Pop Tart train stops for no man or no virus, and somebody’s got to review them (NO ONE IS ASKING ME TO DO THIS.)
Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Churro Pop Tarts continue a hot new trend of exactly two items flavored like chocolate-dipped churros. Last year, which suddenly feels like a generation ago, brought us chocolate Churro Oreos (under the guise of Mystery Oreos). And now there’s this.
Now I’ll admit: I’m a traditionalist when it comes to churros. When I try to branch out, it hasn’t ended well for me.
But if you’re someone who insists on dipping your somethings into something, then Frosted Chocolatey Churro Pop Tarts are made with you in mind.
Frosted Chocolatey Churro Pop Tarts aren’t striking on the visual front, with a pale pastry dough topped with a pale brown frosting and something resembling brown sugar crystals.
A few bites in and I honestly don’t think they taste like churros or chocolate – a big problem for something that’s called Chocolatey Churro Pop Tarts. I thought the churro part would be a slam dunk on paper – a churro is made of dough, these are made of dough, and you really just needed to pump ’em with cinnamon and sugar and call it a day. Boy was I wrong.
The dough is the same Pop Tart pastry dough it always was, and though I didn’t expect it to replicate that fried dough flavor of a churro, inviting a comparison to churro only highlights how lacking the dough part is left all alone. The filling tastes like artificial cinnamon and I’m not picking up on a sweet chocolate component at all. My girlfriend said they taste like dirt.
Toasting was a modest improvement, but didn’t bring the chocolatey churro component together at all.
I can’t see it any other way: Frosted Chocolatey Churro Pop Tarts are a disappointment. What’s weird is they’ve chosen this flavor to be a full-time offering. Out of all the great limited edition ones they could have made permanent in recent years, Kellogg’s locked in on probably the worst Pop Tart I’ve had since those awful Jolly Rancher Pop Tarts which overstayed their welcome but rightfully no longer exist.
Here’s hoping for a similar fate with these.
