How do you make something golden even MORE golden?
I highly advise against glittering up a bowl of Golden Grahams, but what about toasting them until they’re even more golden brown?
And how about, oh I don’t know… STUFFING THEM WITH CHOCOLATE AND MARSHMALLOW LIKE IT’S A GIGANTIC GOLDEN GRAHAMS HOT POCKET?
Pillsbury Golden Grahams S’mores Toaster Strudel
Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t even know what Golden Grahams are anymore thanks to these new Pillsbury Golden Grahams S’mores Toaster Strudels.
From a branding perspective, this is a terrific mash-up. It combines a grossly underrated cereal with an underrated toaster pastry that doesn’t get as much acclaim and attention as the more popular Kellogg’s Pop Tarts. But Golden Grahams don’t use chocolate or marshmallow, and I’m certain there are no actual Golden Grahams used in this breakfast pastry, so I’m curious (and skeptical) if these can live up to their own hype.
I’d say a major difference between these Golden Grahams S’mores Toaster Strudel and a bowl of Golden Grahams is that the former doesn’t burn your tongue off on the first bite.
A second major difference is that Golden Grahams taste like Golden Grahams and these Toaster Strudel couldn’t taste less like them. I mean I’m willing to stretch my imagination when it comes to junk food but the comparison here isn’t warranted. And quite frankly, I’m not even sure a comparison to s’mores is fair.
Obviously, the pastry dough tastes as it always does. It’s flaky, kind of buttery, and kind of greasy like funnel cake.
The marshmallow creme is probably the truest thing in the box. Sweet with a candy vanilla-like flavor, it feels like the only thing they got right here. The chocolate would be fine but there’s not nearly enough of it for this to taste like s’mores. The ratios are just off.
The icing has an artificial graham flavor that isn’t hitting the right note for me at all. I really wish this pastry somehow captured a stronger graham flavor (it probably needed to be in the filling to be that effective), and then had more of a cereal milk vibe than an attempt at s’mores, which ends up being a distraction.
Golden Grahams Toaster Strudel get a gold star for marketing and a… whatever’s worse than bronze star for flavor.
Burning Questions:
- So what do these taste like then? Toaster Strudel.
- What do you mean? They just taste like dough and sugar.
- So what’s the problem? I don’t know.
