Do you remember when oatmeal was healthy?
Well it was, you idiot, but now it’s as convoluted as ever!
Kellogg’s Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies Cereal
Oh, I quite enjoy the irony that what was once a healthy food meant to be eaten as hot cereal is now one of the worst things in the world for you, to be eaten as cold cereal.
Little Debbie herself may very well remember the simpler days of oatmeal, as this new Kellogg’s Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie Cereal coincides with the 60th anniversary of the original Little Debbie Snack Cake.
In its original form, let’s take a look at the benefits of oatmeal as outlined by this article titled “The #1 Food You Should Eat for Breakfast“, and then compare it to this new sugary cereal modeled after creme-filled cookie snack pies.

Kellogg’s Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies cereal has a sweetly coated, creme-flavored frosting covering spiced oatmeal cookie cereal pieces. From a recipe standpoint, the cereal pieces are made with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of molasses, with each bite aiming to deliver the sweet, vanilla creme flavor of the original Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies.
The only problem is, it doesn’t.
Being perfectly honest with you, I had serious doubts that Kellogg’s (or anyone) could capture the classic, unbeatable flavor of a Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Creme Pie snack cake. It’s a tall order to come even remotely close to mimicking a flavor that relies so much on the flavor and texture of copious amounts of creme. I thought it was destined for failure, and I was right.
I’ll give Kellogg’s some credit where it’s due because Kellogg’s Oatmeal Creme Pies cereal doesn’t taste like any other cereal that’s currently on the market. Each big, puffy piece delivers a mix of warm spices that’s pretty unique for cereal, but the spices are overwhelming. Doesn’t remind me of the oatmeal cookie snack cake at all.
And while the cereal pieces are coated in a visible white glaze, it doesn’t feel like it adds much. It’s nowhere near as satisfying as the creme inside an Oatmeal Creme Pie. It tastes closer to a cinnamon roll, if anything. If it didn’t have Little Debbie branding, it would be passable. But because it does, it’s a disappointment.
I still won’t be making oatmeal any time soon.
Burning Questions:
- What do you have against oatmeal? It looks like vomit.

- It doesn’t taste like vomit. Yes, I vomit when I eat oatmeal.
