In 1789, a notorious French monarch once famously declared: “Let them eat cake!”
In 2022, an unknown cookie blogger shouts to no one…
“Let them eat Cakesters!”
It’s been at least a full decade since you last laid your grubby little paws on Oreo Cakesters. These soft-baked treats were born in 2007 and were essentially the Oreo version of a whoopie pie. They were a significant departure from the iconic crunchy cookie we all know and love, and apparently we didn’t know how to feel about it because Oreo Cakesters were discontinued after just five years.
But, like everything else, distance makes the heart grow fatter (or something like that), so enough people complained on Twitter until Nabisco brought Oreo Cakesters back!
And that’s not all – they brought a friend! New Nutter Butter Cakesters!
Today’s review is part of a series. Today’s “Cakester” review is:
Nabisco Nutter Butter Cakesters
When Oreo Cakesters existed the first time, we saw a variety of flavors that mimicked popular Oreos. One thing we never got was an extension to other Nabisco brands. So while everyone else is basking in the nostalgia of Oreo Cakesters, I’m excited for something brand new – an all-peanut butter whoopie pie.
If there’s a peanut butter Heaven out there somewhere, Nutter Butter Cakesters is what it smells like. Just one whiff of these bad boys is all it takes to know I’m in love. If by some awful miracle they don’t taste good, I’ll just shove them up my nose and happily let them live there until I die a few minutes later.
Best as I can tell, both the creme and the cake are peanut butter-flavored. And it’s definitely worth noting that peanut butter is quite high on the ingredient list, so I don’t think they used many artificial means to achieve this. It’s not often you find a cake where the unfrosted, “sponge” part (the cake, as some bakers might call it) is peanut-butter flavored. It’s usually just chocolate or plain yellow cake with peanut butter frosting, so we should really savor these Nutter Butter Cakesters as something special.
The best part? These actually taste a great deal like Nutter Butters. This is something that can’t be said of the Oreo Cakesters, and really give these a strong identity. They’re truly Nutter Butters re-imagined in cake form.
Well done, Nabisco. You brought back the Oreo Cakesters just to shut everyone up, but Nutter Butter Cakesters are the real star.
Burning Questions:
- What’s next for Cakesters? Fig Newton Cakesters!
- Aren’t those just Fig Newtons? I said what I said.
- What you said was dumb. I am what I am.
