A moment of silence for an ice cream I never tried…
RIP Ben & Jerry’s Oatmeal Cookie Chunk.
Ben & Jerry’s Oatmeal Cookie Chunk was sweet cream cinnamon ice cream with chunks of oatmeal cookies & fudge. The ice cream was retired to the Flavor Graveyard in 2012. By popular opinion, this move was complete bullshit. People clamor for its resurrection more than any other flavor.
According to B&J, the supplier of their infamous oatmeal cookie chunks stopped making their infamous oatmeal cookie chunks. Ben & Jerry’s couldn’t locate a suitable replacement, so they just retired the flavor altogether. The cookies must have been out of this world good.
Or should I say, the cookies chunks must have been…
Ben & Jerry’s Oat of this Swirled! It’s not exactly the same thing as Oatmeal Cookie Chunk, but maybe – just maybe – it’s close enough.
Oat of this Swirled replaces the sweet cream cinnamon ice cream with a buttery brown sugar ice cream, and the oatmeal cookie chunks with a new oatmeal cinnamon cookie swirl.
The buttery brown sugar base is the same one Ben & Jerry’s uses in Blondie Ambition – the Target exclusive. It’s not exactly a star flavor but I don’t think it’s really meant to be. Imagine their vanilla bean base… without the vanilla bean? It’s hard to describe a mild flavor like this but there’s some subtle molasses layered underneath.
Fortunately, some cinnamon from the cookie swirl creeps into nearly every bite of the base and it actually ends up being an appropriate and enjoyable backdrop. I think vanilla may have clashed or overpowered a bit had they opted for it. However, I can’t help but imagine how much better that sweet cream cinnamon base in Oatmeal Cookie Chunk must have been.
But if this cookie swirl tastes anything like the forbidden cookie chunks, I can see why that loser was picketing in front of the White House. It tastes like really delicious oatmeal cookies.
The swirl has great texture with a satisfying grit and a bold cinnamon oatmeal flavor. It’s folded seamlessly through that mild base which allows the swirl to shine, and boy does it ever. Every once in a while, you’ll get a thick chunk of swirl like in the photo above. These are by far the best bites (duh), almost emulating cookie chunks. The fudge flakes don’t overpower but they do complement the other components well. Ever had an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie? Ever slap some ice cream on it? Probably not, but it works!
I’m pretty confident that Oatmeal Cookie Chunk diehards will still covet their white whale, but Ben & Jerry’s Oat of this Swirled is one of the best new flavors the company has added to their lineup in a long time. A fantastic swirl blended thoughtfully with a suitable base is sometimes all you need to create a winner. It’s like getting a new puppy after your first one dies; it’s still really cute but it will never be AS cute.
Thanks Obama!

Tried this new flavor today. I was very impressed . Almost as good as Hershey’s outragus oatmeal.
What part of the country did you get this flavor? I can’t seem to find any of the new releases in my region.
I found it at Safeway, Giant, and Redner’s in Maryland. Also Meijer when visiting Michigan.
Thank you! I’ll keep searchin out west!
