Carrot cake. Seriously, the most underrated cake in the world.
Hostess Donettes. Seriously, the best shitty doughnut you can buy for $2.00 at checkout.
Two worlds collide.
Hostess Carrot Cake Donettes combines the best kind of cake with the best mediocre alternative to real doughnuts – Hostess Donettes.
Don’t mistake me for a complete hater; I buy Hostess Donettes every time a new one comes out. But if we’re being completely honest, they’re a rubbery encyclopedia of hard-to-pronounce ingredients covered in things I don’t understand. Some are better than others, but I haven’t been impressed in quite some time. Their creativity on flavors is what keeps drawing me back time and again.
Also, I have the diet of a fourth-grader.
Some Donette flavors are frosted, some are powdered, and some are coated. Hostess Carrot Cake Donettes are covered in a raised coating that resembles shredded coconut.
Turns out it resembles shredded coconut because it actually is shredded coconut. The very first ingredient is “crunch coconut coating” which is made with coconut flakes and toasted coconut. It’s the primary flavor when you bite in, with the coconut adding a natural sweetness beyond just sugar and artificial flavorings. I didn’t even know some carrot cake recipes called for coconut (turns out they do), but I don’t think any of them feature them front-and-center like this.
It might be a little too aggressive for the advertised flavor.
The inside of Hostess Carrot Cake Donuts is a fluffy orange-colored cake. The donuts are predictably dry and you can feel granulated sugar crystals as you chew. The taste of coconut still reigned supreme above all; the carrot cake spices are minute and vague. The only spice I could kind of pinpoint was cinnamon. This needed more nutmeg and ginger to stand a chance. It’s almost as if this was the foundation of a carrot cake recipe and then you got incredibly lazy.
Hostess Carrot Cake Donuts are basically a mishmash of their Crunch Mini Donuts with coconut and those little powdered cinnamon donuts. Without the full complement of carrot cake spices and no signature flavors like raisins, walnuts, or creamy frosting, it doesn’t deliver on its promise.
…dammit, they got me again.

I’m not typically a donut fan, but carrot cake lured me in. I haven’t seen these in the store yet, but maybe it’s best to forgo them and stick with an old fashioned slice of carrot cake instead! Thanks for the review! 🙂
Of course!! If you’re still curious to try them, you can find them at Walmart. Look for a Hostess display in floor space around the bakery or dairy departments. Carrot cake will always lure me in. You may like them more than I.
Thanks for the tip! That’s probably why I haven’t seen them yet.. I don’t frequent Walmart but I will definitely check it out! Carrot cake is one of my faves as well.
