Hostess Summer Berry Donettes are back on shelves! Please find our review from last year below, republished with updated photos:
Berries! Who doesn’t love some fresh berries in the summer? Fruit is good every now and then, especially when the sun is shining bright. Have you ever eaten cake on the beach without most of your clothes on? Not exactly your proudest moment. Berries, though? How fun!
So when you think of summer berries, what do you think of? Personally, I can’t think of any berry that is strictly a “summer berry.” I’m sure most berries are best cultivated in the summer months, but all the popular berries are available year round.
If you’re a Hostess executive, the summer berry is apparently a donut. So put on your swimsuits while they still fit, because tonight we’re eating some Hostess Summer Berry Donettes!
Hostess Summer Berry Donettes are powdered sugar mini donuts that are flavored with all the berries of summer. While I couldn’t figure out which ones were summer berries on my own, Hostess shows blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries on the package. Does this mean that all the good berries are summer berries? Who knows. My takeaway is this: donuts are superfruits.
My God these donuts are a color that donuts should not be. The outside is an unsettling pink and the inside is some kind of maroon. The ingredient list is a hilarious short story where all the characters have names that end in -ate, -ite, -ic, or a number. The protagonist is sugar, though, so there is still some hope.
I’m pretty sure they all die in the end.
Whoa! Upon first bite, I realized that there’s a lot more going on with Hostess Summer Berry Donettes than I was expecting.
The mini donuts have a tart element that’s signature to many berries, but you would never say these taste genuine to any specific fruit. The sweetness isn’t severe or overbearing, which really helps that fruity flavor make an impact. There’s also an unidentifiable, warm spice to these donuts that meshes better with the artificial berry flavor better than you’d think. There’s even something chocolatey in the place that these donuts land. The best way I can describe them is a cinnamon donut meets a chocolate covered strawberry, and then they both meet science together and everyone is confused but it works out.
While the preceding paragraph sounds peculiar and probably disgusting, I actually enjoyed Hostess Summer Berry Mini Donuts! The donuts are cake-y and moist and have a little grit to them as you chomp through. The flavor are unique for bagged donuts and they’re a refreshing change of pace from the flavors you’re used to – about as refreshing as a donut is gonna get, anyway. Or maybe I’m just weird?
Whatever, I ate a whole bunch of these and I’m not ashamed of it.

Welcome! It’s hard for me to pinpoint exactly what I like about these, but I just dig em. And yeah, this is totally fruit.
