REVIEW: Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Nutri-Grain Bars

by Junk Male · August 24, 2016

Coming from a guy who consumes Pop Tarts like oxygen, you might be surprised that breakfast bars are my breakfast of choice.

Just hear me out for a minute. Breakfast bars are great because they’re kind of healthy and kind of not. They allow for a sensibly portioned breakfast. Is one not enough for you? Go ahead and grab another; nobody’s judging. Just march your plate right back up to that breakfast bar and fill it with bacon, doughnuts, fruit… whatever you want! Breakfast bars have it all.

Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Bars are the other kind of breakfast bar – the one nobody gets excited for. That’s because you only eat Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Bars when you don’t have time to prepare yourself a proper meal and you’re out of Pop Tarts. The last Nutri-Grain bar I had was handed to me in a complementary brown bag by the hotel staff as I feverishly escaped the hotel. Just wait until they see how many Twinkie wrappers are clogged in the toilet.

Anyway, pumpkin spice!

Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Nutri-Grain Bar are made with real pumpkin and who cares what else.

Literally baked right into the table because it’s 102 degrees because it’s still the August.

The outside “crust” is nothing to write home about, so I’ll just write about it on my stupid junk food blog instead. It gets the job done. It tastes like oatmeal congealed together and seasoned with a pinch of cinnamon. It’s got a little salt factor that makes it taste strikingly similar to a pie crust. It also contains real ginger, nutmeg, and allspice, but I couldn’t really recognize these nuances. It tasted much like the crust on other Nutri-Grain bars.

My opinion of Kellogg’s Pumpkin Spice Nutri-Grain Bars improved drastically once I got to the pumpkin filling. Like, six to midnight. This filling is straight pumpkin puree, two different kinds of sugar, and a little spice. It taste remarkably authentic to pumpkin pie filling. The filling is very soft, and the warm fall spices made me forget that the temperature was in the triple digits as I prepare this review. Protip: warm the bar in a conventional oven for a fresh-baked feel. Really tasty stuff.

Though the filling is plentiful, some of the flavor is blocked by the density of the crust. Kellogg’s Nutri Grain Bars are akin to those last few bites of a slice of pumpkin pie. You know, where your crust outweighs your filling considerably? Still impressive for a soft baked breakfast bar at 140 calories. If you were to put these out at a breakfast bar, I would happily grab a couple along with a side of bacon and three additional plates of French toast. Don’t sleep on these, people. You can sleep after that fourth trip back to the breakfast bar.

In summary, I love breakfast bars.
