If you grew up or were alive in the early 90s, you may remember Crystal Pepsi. The product was a crystal clear version of Pepsi that was supposed to taste exactly like Pepsi, but in reality tasted nothing like Pepsi. Crystal Pepsi was introduced in 1992 with an aggressive marketing campaign featuring a commercial that aired during Super Bowl XXVII, the one where the Cowboys demolished the Bills 52-17. You may remember this commercial featuring “Right Now” by Van Halen, or you may not remember it if you weren’t alive.
The commercial was weird as hell and didn’t make it clear why you should want to drink Crystal Pepsi, besides briefly mentioning that it contained no caffeine. The marketing seemed to work effectively, and initial sales were strong. Then everybody must have discovered simultaneously that it was awful. The caffeine-free beverage was a commercial disaster (I’ve got to assume the diet version did even worse). Crystal Pepsi was pulled off the market by 1993. It has since developed a massive cult following by the very people who likely hated it back in the 90s. After years and years of fan pages and harassment on social media, Pepsi Co. has finally caved. Kind of. Crystal Pepsi has been produced in limited quantities and will be given away to 13,000 lucky winners.
