It’s been almost two years since I’ve even uttered the words “Blue Bunny” on this blog, but if you want me to come out of brand retirement… shoving donuts in ice cream is the way to go.
Blue Bunny Chocolate Donut Ice Cream
There’s no grandiose backstory; donut is the operative word today.
Vanilla ice cream. Milk chocolate icing. Rainbow sprinkles. Donuts.
It’s your typical ice cream sundae, that your typical gross self decided to add donuts to, because you typically don’t eat typical things that normal people do.
Now there is a little cause for concern here. Doughnuts are great on top of ice cream, with ice cream, and used as a sandwich bun around ice cream, but IN ice cream? That can be tricky. Once frozen and trapped inside, they sometimes become spongey and weird.
The remedy is always to count your blessings and just be grateful that you live in a country where you can buy a 1.5 quart tub of ice cream with donuts in it for $3.50, BUT it’s worth noting that execution varies on a wide scale.
Blue Bunny’s donut pieces win on multiple fronts – even if they’re no better than donuts you buy while pumping gas.
First, the donuts have a much softer chew than I was expecting. At most they have the density of a light brownie. It’s the best case scenario.
Second, the donuts have a yellow cake-like flavor… perhaps so much so that it’s hard to identify them as donuts at all, but it’s a very good flavor that belongs with everything it’s paired with.
Lastly, the donuts are goddamned everywhere.
Seriously, the best part about Blue Bunny Chocolate Donut ice cream is that every spoonful is overflowing with multiple mix-ins, and you’ll never have to dig far for more doughnuts.
The rest of the components? Each thing exceeds its expectations.
The vanilla ice cream is slightly airy and won’t win any awards for the richest ice cream on the block, but its flavor is perfect for the price point. It’s a vibrant, sweet vanilla rather than a dull one. It provides a good backdrop for the milk chocolate icing, which is basically just a chocolate fudge sauce that I thoroughly enjoyed.
And the sprinkles not only make the ice cream look fun as hell, but you can taste them too.
I love this stuff. Normally with ice creams like this I just mine for the mix-ins, but with Blue Bunny Chocolate Donut the entire journey is a delicious one. AND it’s an actual mine field of doughnuts throughout the container.
Nevermind that they should have named this Chocolate Frosted Yellow Cake Donut and not simply Chocolate Donut, because this is one of the best bargain ice creams in the game.
Burning Questions:
- Can you think of anything that isn’t better off with donuts? Diets.
- Is Blue Bunny one of the most under appreciated brands? It is.
- Isn’t this essentially the Vanilla Cupcake flavor from a few years ago? Probably.

Yes yes yes. I’m super into this flavor. I don’t normally re-buy flavors, especially 1.5L because that’s so much ice cream to eat when I have a huge backlog, but I’ve actually bought this twice and plan a third. It’s a very close spiritual successor to one of my other favorite BB flavors—Vanilla Cupcake. I never had the (in)famous Holi-Doodle so I cant rank it amongst that, but Chocolate Donut is up there with my other BB favs: Honey Bunny, Vanilla Cupcake, and Cookie Butter. “Gas station donut” is a perfect comparison.
I never buy blue bunny since I’m cheap and its not on sale as much as the other big name brands but I picked this flavor up about two months ago since I seen it was new and thought it looked different and I agree that it has a strong birthday cake flavor with chocolate swirls which is awesome and the sprinkles are huge but it is very very sweet so I could only eat so much which made it last a while but yes I would definitely recommend this to anybody who is a fan of chocolate birthday cake.
