Dove, in a bold move, decided not to give this candy an actual name. Instead they provide a lengthy description of what the product is, use their own brand name twice in the same sentence, and call it a day. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but at least you know what you’re in for. (Though the prominent placement of what I thought were mint leaves on the package did confuse me–there’s no mint anywhere in here.)
There are two things I love about Dove chocolate: its creaminess and its troubling diet advice. But this rendition suffers from the same chalky and crumbly texture that befalls most candy in the “chocolate-coated” genre (think Brookside, Raisinets, Butterfinger BB’s, Goobers, etc). I guess they have to coat the chocolate in some non-tasty chemical to make it stick to the candy in the center, but it’s a real disappointment from a brand that boasts about its texture in the product name.
They could’ve saved things by really nailing the cherry center, but that part is mediocre as well. I appreciate that there’s a real (dried) cherry in the center, but the chocolate coating is too thick and overwhelms the pleasant but slight fruit flavor. I took a picture to deconstruct the whole thing. Taking that picture was infinitely more fun than eating the actual candy.
Overall, if you’re in the mood for chocolate and fruit, buy them separately. Then you can actually get real whole cherries, creamy Dove chocolate, AND an unsettlingly intimate compliment from your wrapper.
