Sometimes things are just so wrong that it’s right, and that very well may be the case here. Everything from Frito-Lay just had an orgy and then this happened: three new limited edition chips that are all lovechilds of Lay’s potato chips and other Frito-Lay classics. Introducing:
- Cheetos Cheese Flavored Lay’s Chips
- Doritos Cool Ranch Flavored Lay’s Chips
- Funyuns Onion Flavored Lay’s Chips
Another way to look at it? Lay’s found a great recycling program for all that seasoning at the bottom of the bag.

Funyuns Onion Flavored Lay’s Chips
In my book, the Lay’s Funyuns Chips are the most intriguing of the bunch. Because unlike Cheetos and Doritos, which you probably already ate today, you probably can’t remember the last time you had Funyuns. Or… you’ve just never had Funyuns.
For the uninitiated, Funyuns are onion-flavored snacks that look like onion rings but don’t actually contain any onions. They’re probably the most underrated product in the Frito-Lay family. I used to pretend they were real onion rings and dip them in ketchup when I was in college because I’m a mongrel.
Working in these chips’ favor, they’re also the only one of the three that feature the Wavy chip.
The Lay’s Wavy Funyuns chips taste just about as good as Funyuns, although I’ll admit they’re not as fun without the onion-ring shape. The seasoning is primarily onion powder and garlic. The switch from a corn base on the original Funyuns to this potato chip vehicle is a nice little twist, and the Wavy texture gives them a powerful crunch.
If you like sour cream & onion chips, these are like a less creamy, more savory version of that.
Burning Questions:
- Why eat these if you could just eat Funyuns?The same reason you eat Funyuns when you could just eat onion rings.
- Because I like to eat? Because you like to eat.
- Are chip companies just getting lazier? Probably!
