When it comes to ice cream, I don’t suffer from the problem that plagues most Americans. You know, the one where you take a pint of ice cream from your freezer, bring it to the couch, and it vanishes in a cloud of delight, shame, and regret. Poof.
You see it’s one thing I don’t typically overindulge in. I have a freezer overflowing with it, but I like to reserve it for a few spoonfuls after dinner to satisfy my sweet tooth. Even though I eat a LOT of different ice cream, to me it’s the perfect way to finish a meal and a little bit goes a long way.
You know what I do overindulge in on occasion? Alcohol – and soon my ice cream strategy falls by the wayside. With my inhibitions thrown out the window, I have crushed many a pint of ice cream – some of which I remember, and some of which I only learn of from the empty carton serving as evidence in my garbage can (and once in my bed).
Häagen-Dazs new Spirits Collection appeals to me for a lot of reasons…
Two birds, one stone, zero f*cks given.
This review is part of a series. Today’s Häagen-Dazs Spirits is:
Häagen-Dazs Spirits Irish Cream Brownie
The description from Häagen-Dazs is rich Irish Cream infused ice cream folded together with chocolate brownie pieces and a decadent fudge swirl.
It should come as no surprise that Irish Cream works wonderfully in ice cream, and this base has to be one of my new favorites on the market. It’s delectably smooth and creamy, with hints of coffee and a more-vanilla-than-chocolate-but-also-chocolate flavor. It has a bit of nuttiness to it – almost like a hazelnut.
It’s perfectly Irish Cream.
It’s not terribly boozy, much like Irish Creme is the most approachable of any liqueur. But there is just enough whiskey taste noticeable in the base to make any quasi-alcoholic like me proud.
There are brownie pieces mixed throughout, increasing the chocolate flavor that’s layered in the base. They blend seamlessly and fit together in that regard, though I must admit that most pieces were chopped so small that they lacked the richness and density that I prefer from my brownie pieces.
Whenever I was treated to a larger piece I was momentarily transported to Heaven.. where the drinks were flowin’ and the brownies had the good shit in them.
The “decadent” fudge swirl lacked decadence, however, and amounts to my biggest complaint. I didn’t find any pools of it, and had a hard time distinguishing it from the soft brownie pieces mixed in. The two were a little redundant.
So while the choice of mix-ins could have been more compelling, and their frequency more abundant, the base of Häagen-Dazs Irish Cream Brownie is so good that it’s still a bona fide winner in my book. Caveat that I’ve been sipping on whiskey the whole time I wrote this review.
So much for that “two birds, one stone” shit…
Sayanora, this pint.
Burning Questions:
- What makes the cream Irish? The fact that I’m drunk.
- How’d you get the little dots over the “a” in Häagen-Dazs? Google it.
- You’re fät. Nice work.
