When it comes to coping with grief, I like to think I keep my emotions in check pretty well. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a good cry if that’s how your emotions surface, but I can count the times I’ve cried in my adult life on one hand (they were all ugly cries, but only because every cry is an ugly cry if you’re an ugly person like me).
The closest thing you’ll find to me crying occurs when two events happen:
- My favorite junk foods are discontinued.
- My favorite junk foods are resurrected.
Well shed those tears of joy, my friends, because Kellogg’s has heard your cries to bring back Cupcake Pop Tarts.
Kellogg’s Cupcake Pop Tarts
Now I must admit: it wasn’t me who did the crying when Confetti Cupcake Pop Tarts were discontinued. In fact, it took me about a year to notice when they were unceremoniously pulled from shelves at some point in 2016. But enough of you whined on social media to make Confetti Cupcake Pop Tarts the second-most requested flavor to return to the Pop Tarts line-up, and Kellogg’s responded not only by bringing those back, by introducing a chocolatey cousin with Chocolate Cupcake Pop Tarts.
My diet is crying a little bit too, because now I have 32 Pop Tarts to get through.

Kellogg’s Chocolate Cupcake Pop Tarts
Let me just say it right off the bat: I’m powerless to a good gimmick. The little squiggly that they added to imitate the classic Hostess Cupcake makes these instantly more enjoyable to me before I even take a bite. It’s the most elementary little thing, but this inspired decoration is way cooler to me than when they print entire friggin’ comics on some Pop Tarts.
Kellogg’s Chocolate Frosted Cupcakes appear to be a simple amalgamation of the basic building blocks to many other Pop Tarts. They use a deep chocolate dough, chocolate frosting, and some kind of vanilla filling.
But Holy Moly do they all come together to form something delicious!
The floury chocolate dough combined with the sweeter chocolate frosting really do give off enough of a chocolate cake flavor to work as the Pop Tarted version of Hostess’s signature snack. And the filling? Much like the creamy insides of the cupcake. The filling even seems creamier and more fluid than it is in some other Pop Tarts (like the Confetti Cupcake or Sugar Cookie Pop Tarts).
And as much as I enjoy these straight out of the package (a lot), toasting them transforms them into another uniquely satisfying dessert. They kind of play out like a more chocolatey version of the S’mores Pop Tart, and any time you can draw comparisons to what many consider the greatest Pop Tart of all time, it is a compliment.
Chocolate Cupcake Pop Tarts are so good I’m almost getting emotional…
