Much like Frosted Watermelon Pop Tarts are the zombies of the deceased Wild Watermelon Pop Tarts, today we’ll be reviewing another flavor straight from the Pop Tart Graveyard.
Reintroducing: Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Caramel Pop Tarts!
At some point that I totally don’t remember, Frosted Caramel Chocolate Pop Tarts were a thing. How the hell did we let those die? Did we, the fattest country on the planet, NOT like the combination of chocolate and caramel for breakfast?
Though I’m disappointed in all of us, my faith has been restored with Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Caramel Pop Tarts. Note that these are a new flavor (not limited edition) that should be sticking around for a good long while unless they suck.
Can these even suck? We’re about to find out.
Now if you stalk the grocery store shelves with the same intensity that I do (not possible), you may be aware that Kellogg’s Special K Chocolatey Caramel Pastry Crisps have been around for a while. I have not tried those, but Kellogg’s appears to have injected those with caramel steroids to make them bigger and fatter for our bigger, fatter palates.
Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Caramel Pop Tarts feature a chocolate dough (ok…) with a caramel filling (alright…) with chocolate frosting (OK) and a caramel drizzle (ALRIGHT!) My fat boy pants are on (because I literally do not fit into anything else at this point) and I am ready to go.
Unadulterated and untoasted first. Opening the foil pouch of Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Caramel Pop Tarts invites a rich chocolatey aroma that is unmistakably “Pop Tart.” The flavor untoasted is the same: familiar, comforting, chocolate.
I sat and pondered, but I didn’t pick up on much caramel until really deep into the back end (yeah, I know, I heard it too). More like Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Chocolate, am I right?
Maybe if we toast it, the caramel will come say hello.
HELLLLLLO, Caramel! So glad you could finally join us – this glass of milk has your name on it.
Toasting the Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Caramel Pop Tart did the trick. This is when things got all sticky, both in the Pop Tart and maybe a little downstairs too. The melty filling comes to life, and I instantly tasted the buttery, sweet & salty combo of quality caramel. Amazingly, the caramel flavor went from barely noticeable untoasted to headlining the show toasted.
You still taste the chocolate dough, but the warm filling is where the party’s at. For something made entirely of chocolate and caramel, I never once thought that this was too sweet – likely thanks to the bittersweet notes in the chocolate dough and a judicious – not excessive – use of caramel filling.
Like Frosted Watermelon Pop Tarts, this is another Pop Tart that I’m going to toast 10 times out of 10 and you should do the same. Of the three flavors just released, I still have to give the nod to the limited edition Maple Bacon flavor – even though they made me feel like I was taken advantage of by Mrs. Buttersworth. But as a new and (currently) permanent offering, we welcome Kellogg’s Frosted Chocolatey Caramel Pop Tarts to the Pop Tart family with open arms, open mouths, and open hearts.
