Because adding marshmallows to Frosted Flakes wasn’t enough…
Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate with Marshmallows comes a few months after Tony tried to murder us with Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes with Marshmallows. Was the latter perfect? Nope. But I still landed on the conclusion that all cereals are better with marshmallows.
I was so confident in this theory that I recently bought a 1 lb. bag of nothing but marshmallows on Amazon to test it out. First I tried it with Cap’n Crunch’s Orange Creampop Crunch. Better! Next I tried Peanut Butter Crunch to create my own Fluffernutter Crunch. Two-for-two!
At this point, I needed to rule out the extreme that I just really loved the marshmallows. I trust you know where this is headed:
So it ain’t just the marshmallows. Adding them to cereal, though, unleashes a magic that only your inner child can understand.
Despite being an upgrade over the original, Frosted Flakes with Marshmallows had room for improvement. Tonight I begin testing a second theory – that chocolate improves everything.
Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate with Marshmallows is a limited edition release for Halloween 2016. To get you into the spirit, the marshmallows are shaped like skulls, bones, pelvises, and… torsos..? Torsi? Whatever, you get to build your own skeleton!
You can also build tiny little Marshmallow Dicks.
The good news is that if these taste like anyone’s dick, it’s probably Count Chocula’s. Not that I would want to try Count Chocul… I’m just saying that if it had to taste like anyone’s…
Let me start over:
Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate with Marshmallows tastes good.
There we go.
The flakes have a prominent “cereal cocoa” flavor. It’s right in line with other chocolatey cereals like Cocoa Pebbles and Cocoa Krispies, except these are a bit sweeter because they’re Frosted Flakes. It makes the chocolate feel more developed, but it’s not so strong as to overpower all that sweet, sweet corn they’re made with.
The marshmallows provide more contrast in flavor than with the non-chocolate Frosted Flakes with Marshmallows. They add a gentle & creamy sweetness against the cocoa-dusted flakes. They also add a contrast in texture, with the marshmallows being a softer chew against the Earth-shattering crunch of the Frosted Flakes. What’s impressive is that there’s actual balance here.
In milk, Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate with Marshmallows performs well. Some of the immediate chocolate notes wash away temporarily, but resurface later into the chew. Less is more with regards to the milk. Just give ’em a healthy tease of milk and all the flavors remain in tact without the cereal getting soggy. You’ll notice the resulting cereal milk doesn’t have a huge chocolate flavor when you’re done. I view this as a good thing – additional evidence that the chocolate remains on the flakes and is present in every bite. I’ve always liked Frosted Flakes in milk; Frosted Flakes Chocolate with Marshmallows are no exception.
At this point I’d like to remind everyone that I still have the taste buds of a five-year-old.
In summary, chocolate improves everything.
