Last year, these chips were inspired by the Midwest state fair.
This year, they’re inspired by a gigantic mouth.
Lay’s Fried Pickles with Ranch
Meet Shawn O, one of Lay’s Mouth Models on these specially-marked bags of Lay’s Potato Chips designed to help support Operation Smile. It’s his nose, mouth, and beard that hovers proudly over the Lays logo on the bag of Lay’s Fried Pickles with Ranch chips I purchased. His player-card on the back reads:
Akio [is a] tech worker dedicated to making others feel special through the “analogy technology” of handwritten notes.
I have NO IDEA what the heck Akio does, but you know what makes me feel special?
Breading and deep-frying vegetables and then dipping them in Ranch dressing to erase any and all nutritional value!
Last year you had to live in the Midwest or order your chips online in Lay’s Fatasses Across America promotion (actual name: Lay’s Tastes of America in order to get them, but this year Lay’s Fried Pickles with Ranch should be easily procured at Target.
My mostly copy/pasted review appears after the jump, because unlike Akio, I do not know how to write things that make people smile twice in one calendar year.
Last year’s promotion included this description:
Inspired by a deep-fried favorite at Midwest state fairs, get a taste of fried pickles with ranch. Who’s ready for a ride on the Ferris wheel?
Because there’s nothing like someone puking Fried Pickles down your neck from the sky above…
I was most excited for Lay’s Fried Pickles with Ranch out of all flavors in last year’s promotion, and for the most part these chips don’t disappoint. A great deal of dill flavor – both from juicy pickles and ranch dressing. Some might argue they could use more flavoring, as a direct comparison to fellow Tastes of America alumni Lay’s Deep Dish Pizza reveals that these are more lightly seasoned overall. I personally think they struck a good balance though; the sprinkle of herbs provides some complexity for the creamy ranch component and the grease helps the fried batter angle just enough.
But there’s absolutely no excuse for these not to be Wavy.
Burning Questions:
- Why aren’t these Wavy? Inexcusable.
- Do you prefer fried pickle chips or fried pickle spears? Spears.
- Who actually handwrites notes? Akio.
