REVIEW: Lay’s Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup

by Junk Male · November 4, 2019

When I get sick, I want tomato soup. It’s the only time I eat tomato soup.

When I eat tomato soup, I want grilled cheese. It’s the only time I eat grilled cheese.

I can’t WAIT to get sick and eat potato chips!

With logic like that, I’ll be dead in no time.

Lay’s newest Frankenstein potato chip is the limited-time-only Lay’s Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup. I always give Lay’s props for being able to accurately capture the flavor of complex food items into potato chips (like Fried Green Tomatoes, Crispy Tacos, and well… pretty much the entire world) but I especially admire their bravado when they try to capture MULTIPLE food items simultaneously.

That’s not to say they’re always successful; Lay’s Chicken & Waffles tasted like feet. But cheese and tomato are both something right in Lay’s wheelhouse given their regular offerings, and I’m feeling pretty confident they can nail the extra complexities associated with their respective dishes.

To get myself in the mood, I’ve been licking doorknobs for about a week and now I have the flu.

Buon appetite!

Lay’s Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup are indeed comforting just like their namesake pairing. I got more cheddar cheese flavor initially, but as I ate more and more I began to get little smacks of tomato. And then the more I continued to eat, I got the creaminess and herbs associated with tomato soup. And a slight butteriness.

Lay’s has done it again!

Safe to say this bread is a potato bread, and the crispy chips work effectively as a toasted bread component of grilled cheese.

Accurate as they are, Lay’s Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup doesn’t have as bold a seasoning as some of their other chips. This can be a plus or a minus depending on your preference for subtlety or strong flavors. For me, it’s an impressive seasoning that manages to be a bit on the underwhelming side. But I still enjoy them and they’re definitely worth a shot.

Now excuse me while I go back to watching The Price is Right between bouts of puking my brains out.

Burning Questions:

  1. Best bid for these chips without going over? $1
  2. Best Price is Right Game? The yodeling guy.
  3. Who became host after Bob Barker? Nobody. He is the only host.
