Pardon my being a dumbass and all, but what exactly is a truffle?
Yeah, I kinda know what a truffle is. But I kinda don’t at the same time. When I think truffles, I think chocolate coating with something soft and delicious in the middle. Then I started this blog and reviewed JC’s Pie Bites, billed as truffles. They were hard as a rock and tasted worse.
So then what the hell is a truffle? Is it chocolate-coated fungus? Is it chocolate that makes me dance like this when I eat it? According to Wikipedia himself, a truffle is “chocolate, cocoa, or nuts surrounding a ganache center.” Great, but WTF is ganache?!
The only thing I know for certain about truffles is that Lindt LINDOR Truffles are the standard. These were a popular item in my house around the holidays. My parents always had a candy dish of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate Lindt LINDOR Truffles ready for Santa and I to sumo wrestler for. But Christmas must have come early this year, because we now have Lindt LINDOR Pumpkin Spice Truffles!
Lindt LINDOR Pumpkin Spice Truffles feature a delicate milk chocolate shell enveloping an “irresistibly smooth” pumpkin spice truffle filling.” So wait… just the filling is considered a truffle? So confused. Anyway, the filling contains pumpkin powder but the ingredients don’t identify any of the spices used.
I’m still in the dark here.
Okay, so you have to remember that chocolate is still the star player here. The chocolate shell of the Lindt LINDOR Pumpkin Spice Truffle is just like every other truffle they make. It’s a creamy, sweet milk chocolate with a mighty fine crunch to it. I consider it pretty high quality chocolate – nothing cheap about it. But all the sexy stuff happens in the middle, and there’s a TON of filling in Lindt LINDOR truffles.
Now, the filling is still predominantly chocolate too. The pumpkin spices are merely complementing this chocolate instead of overpowering it. The pumpkin spice flavoring has a creaminess to it that makes me think of a pumpkin spice latte heavy on the cream and light on the coffee. I got some cinnamon, I got some nutmeg, but it really didn’t send a wave of activity to the portion of my brain reserved for processing pumpkin spices – the entire left half. It was a bit disappointing in that regard.
But I’ll be frank with you – I still enjoyed Lindt LINDOR Pumpkin Spice Truffles. They embody everything I’ve come to know about Lindt LINDOR truffles, even if I still don’t know what truffles are. They’re delectable chocolate candies with decadent taste, luscious texture, and a very mild pumpkin spice kick. Plus I feel fancy and nostalgic when I eat them. Chocolate + pumpkin isn’t a foolproof combination, but I think Lindt did well enough. Could be better, though…
In summary, I guess I’ll share with Santa.
