Though we tend to lose ourselves in Donuts and S’mores and Pumpkin Pies, when it comes to breakfast pastries? It’s hard to beat a nice, wholesome, not-much-better-at-all-for-you fruit flavor.
Pillsbury Toaster Strudel is no stranger to the game. At the time of this writing, Pillsbury offers Toaster Strudel in a fruit salad of varieties such as apple, strawberry, strawberry apple, strawberry cream cheese, cherry, blueberry, raspberry, and wild berry (which is probably cherry, blueberry, and raspberry combined).
But there is one fruit – arguably the best fruit – that they haven’t tried until now.
Cereal.
Pillsbury Trix Fruitalicious Berry Toaster Strudel is the company’s latest branded mash-up to hit the freezer aisle, joining the likes of Cinnabon, Hershey’s and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
Perhaps perusing the ingredients will share some insight on which fruits Trix are actually supposed to be. With less than 2% of strawberry puree and blueberry puree, these Toaster Strudel officially contain 1,000,000% more fruit than Trix.
Let’s just get this out of the way: the icing tastes nothing like Trix cereal – nothing. The dark pink icing favors a sweet artificial strawberry, which is cut by some pleasant artificial blueberry notes and accented by a lot more pure table sugar notes.
It’s a good icing for a pastry, but it is not Trix.
A much more authentic strawberry and blueberry filling rests inside the pastry. The strawberry filling lies towards the outer edges while the blueberry is squarely in the center. Both are very good but also are in no way Trix, and they don’t taste any different than what’s already in other Toaster Strudel flavors.
Considering a box of Trix includes colors suggesting many more fruits than just strawberry and blueberry, this feels like a total misrepresentation of the popular cereal.
Pillsbury Fruitalicious Berry Toaster Strudel presents a classic junk food blogger conundrum: they taste better than the score I’m about to give, but points are docked for not earning the Trix title they sport.
Silly Dough Boy… Trix are not this.
