When I think about breakfast, the first thing that comes to mind is “ice cream.” Introducing Post Ice Cream Pebbles, the newest entry in the Pebbles lineup to fight for shelf space with Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, and Poppin Pebbles (which exist by the way). Post describes them as “a cool fusion of rainbow sherbet flavors that make breakfast a blast.” They don’t identify the flavors, but judging from their colors, a safe assumption would be Lime, Orange, and… Pink.
The back of the box features an excited teenager who was enjoying his Ice Cream Pebbles when suddenly a humongous ice cream cone thrust him into the sky, obliterating his house:
The box claims that “Every spoonful is… a blast of Ice Cream Pebbles awesome!” A poorly constructed sentence, but it gets the job d one.
Further review of the box art reveals the possibility of a broken home:
His Mother is delighted that her very own son has been launched into the Heavens, while his Father is not concerned at all about the irreparable damage to his house. Their dog is horrified, and nobody seems to care that the enormous banana split in the fridge is going to melt if somebody doesn’t close the damn door. His little sister is pointing and mocking our protagonist, while a random cow looks on as if this is the opportunity he has been waiting for.
Now that the stage is set, let’s talk about the actual cereal. First things first – Post Ice Cream Pebbles tastes very sweet when eaten without milk I definitely get a citrusy, sherbet-like flavor that I think they did pretty well. The problem is more so with the artificially sweet aftertaste that is admittedly expected. I get a little bit of tangy flavor (is that you, lime?), but the artificial sweetness overpowers it. I then tried these with some cashew milk. Surprisingly, this helped with the sweetness. But this cereal suffered from what all Pebbles suffer from when eaten in milk; they get soggy instantly. A soggy, thick mess, I felt like I was eating a bowl of warm, melted sherbet that wasn’t a very good bowl of sherbet to begin with. Advice: Use just a splash of milk, or wolf down this cereal before it gets soggy.
I will give Post some credit for invoking the flavors of a sherbet, but I am not sure why anyone would want to eat Ice Cream Pebbles instead of the far-superior Fruity Pebbles. Without the cool sensation of actual sherbet, the flavors are just not that appealing and don’t really click for me as a cereal. Our only hope is that Post will soon transform Cocoa Pebbles into an Ice Cream Pebbles version. I would be all over Rocky Road Pebbles like white on rice.
I would also eat White Rice Pebbles.
