Smartfood has had a lot of fun recently playing with sweet flavors, and even partnering with strange bedfellows like Cap’n Crunch. For their latest limited time offering they’re looking in the direction of Krispy Kreme for inspiration, trying to mimic the magical Original Glaze they coat their signature doughnuts in. With coated caramel popcorn being such a time-tested hit, this doesn’t seem like a stretch at all. In fact, it just screams “brilliance.”
But hey, even the smart ones get it wrong sometimes…
Is this bad? Of course not, dummy. But there isn’t much “doughnut” about the Smartfood Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnut popcorn. It tastes like sugary glazed popcorn without a whole lot of depth. Pretty much just a lesser version of caramel corn.
I suppose I haven’t ingested Krispy Kreme glaze on anything but a doughnut, but I’d be hard-pressed to say it reminded me of Krispy Kreme in any way at all. What’s worse, there’s nothing about it that makes me want to keep eating it like most popcorns (or doughnuts, for that matter).
Maybe I’m just dumb for thinking this could have actually worked.

- Did this popcorn go to Yale or something? It might have.
- Maybe Krispy Kreme should do a popcorn doughnut. Looks like somebody else went to Yale too!
