Fresh off the heels of a popcorn flavored like polarizing candy corn, Trader Joe’s has a new flavor I think we can all celebrate…
Trader Joe’s Birthday Cake Popcorn
Don’t mistake me for stupid, guys. I KNOW this is going to taste like sugary popcorn and little else. But I also know that I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t buy it, complain that it doesn’t taste like birthday cake on my snack blog, and then eat the entire bag anyway.
Sue me, I’m human.
Here’s the birthday hype from Trader Joe’s:
Your actual date of birth might only happen once per year, but who’s to say you can’t celebrate every day like it’s your birthday? Trader Joe’s Birthday Cake Popcorn is a party in a bag. We take just-popped popcorn, cover it in a sweet and crunchy vanilla flavored glaze, and finish it off with colorful confetti sprinkles. It makes the day-to-day just a little more festive and delicious!”
Of course this lengthy sell was totally unnecessary, as the following would have been just as effective:
We put some sprinkles on popcorn and you’re going to buy it.
Each piece of Trader Joe’s Birthday Cake Popcorn is large, rounded, and mega crunchy. The vanilla glaze is the same thickness and smoothness of traditional caramel corn. The coating is a light, yellowish brown and the pieces are adorned with pink, purple, yellow and orange sprinkles that are noticeably crunchy in their own right.
Blah blah blah, does it taste like birthday cake?
Of course not, you dummy! I’m not even sure I taste that much of the “vanilla glaze” as I do just a hyper-sweet popcorn. Possibly too sweet; you may not have invited your dentist to your birthday party, but you’re going to see him anyway.
Now, didn’t we just go through this with the Candy Corn Popcorn that I ended up loving? Yes, but something is definitely missing here. There was much more “I get what they were going for” with the Candy Corn Popcorn, while this Birthday Cake Popcorn falls especially flat.
The vanilla glaze doesn’t taste like cake frosting, but also – doesn’t the cake part of a yellow cake actually carry some flavor? Ya know, like fluffy, floury cooked batter? Birthday cake items consistently lack it, but it’s especially glaring here with this popcorn.
Remove the saltiness of caramel corn, toss in some sprinkles, and voila: Trader Joe’s Birthday Cake Popcorn.
Bag’s almost gone, by the way.
Burning Questions:
- So you knew this would disappoint and bought it anyway? Thats right.
- Why? Sprinkles.
- Do you even like sprinkles? Not particularly.
