If you’re a Grandma reading my blog, holler at me. This review is for you:
Objectively, Werther’s Originals are delicious candies that everyone in the world should enjoy. In reality, only Grandmas own the rights to them. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a Werther’s OG unless it originated from the bottom of Grandma’s purse and without me waiting five minutes for her to successfully locate it. But I don’t have the pleasure of hanging out with too many Grandmas these days (Grandmas are the best by the way), so I can’t recall the last time I had a Werther’s Original.
HOWEVER, the new Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn (Sea Salt & Pretzel) changes the game. Pretzels are for everyone, and if you attach the words “sea salt” to caramel I’m immediately interested. What we have here is caramel popcorn of the finest Grandma quality combined with sea salt and huge pretzels. It’s trail mix for Grandmas and Gluttons alike.
The caramel popcorn in Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn (Sea Salt & Pretzel) is like every other caramel popcorn but better. For what it’s werth, the caramel used tastes exactly like that of a Werther’s Original candy. The butter is dialed up to 11 here. It’s neat to get that exact same flavor that only Grandmas can dish out but through the texture of caramel popcorn. The caramel corn is coated with a familiar glossy coating that is thicker in some bites than others. Those are the best ones; the ones protected in a fine caramel body armor.
The popcorn vastly outweighs the pretzels in Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn (Sea Salt & Pretzel). However, most of the pretzels are enormous. The pretzel pieces are strong and sturdy and often have sheets of caramel filling in the gaps with pieces of caramel popcorn trapped inside. These pieces operate much like a caramel popcorn version of peanut brittle. It goes without saying that these are the best pieces. (Dammit, I just said it…)
The concept of this product was a strong one from the start and it doesn’t disappoint. Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn (Sea Salt & Pretzel) tastes like a really, really adult version of Cracker Jack without the peanuts. I do think peanuts would have been a nice addition here. I could have also gone for more salt on the large pretzel pieces, but these criticisms are minor.
In summary, Grandma & Grandpa were onto something…
Pays Homage to the OG Rating: 8.5 out of 10
Availability of Werther’s Original Unless You’re a Grandma Rating: 0 out of 10
Overall Rating: 8 out of 10

Seriously, why no nuts of some sort? Slackers..
First they did caramel popcorn without the pretzels. Then they added pretzels for this release. Let’s hope they continue the progression and get some nuts in there next time.
