The following review is in the “Quick Bite” format. These are basically rapid-fire reviews without the lame story.
Dunkin’ Donuts
Sugar Cookie Donut & Gingerbread Cookie Donut
Your favorite holiday cookies are now even more fattening…
Dunkin’ Donuts Sugar Cookie Donut
Dunkin’ Donuts Sugar Cookie Donut is a frosted yeast doughnut with a sweet cookie dough flavored filling and topped with crumbled frosted sugar cookies.
The Sugar Cookie Donut is your classic example of “Doesn’t taste like what it says, but still tastes pretty good.” Assuming you want 410 cals of pure sugar, of course…
Everyone in Unison: “Of course!”
The white frosting is either lightly vanilla flavored, or just straight sugar-flavored. The frosted sugar cookie topping, which looks like gravel, cauliflower, or a popcorn ceiling, tastes exactly like Rice Krispie Treats cereal. Not exactly the sugar cookie flavor I was hoping for, but an unintentional homage to one of my favorite cereals and one of my least favorite ceilings.
The cookie dough flavored filling doesn’t taste like any cookie dough I’ve ever eaten. It’s very sweet, with a slight caramel flavor and a questionable tangy note.
Dunkin’s Sugar Cookie Donut is a fun donut that will likely be too one-dimensional, or too sweet, for some.
Burning Questions:
- Was it too sweet for you? Of course not.
- Where did you buy it? You’re kidding.
- I’m not; can you please tell me where you got this? …… Starbucks.

Dunkin’ Donuts Gingerbread Cookie Donut
Dunkin’ Donuts Gingerbread Cookie Donut is a yeast-based donut with caramel frosting, sprinkled gingerbread cookie pieces, and no filling.
The Gingerbread Cookie Donut is the textbook example of when to use “The Eyeball Test.”
If you look over the counter and see Gingerbread Cookie Donuts that look like mine, slathered with caramel and littered with cookie pieces, you buy. The gingerbread cookies are hugely spiced and play well off the caramel.
If you look over the counter and see Gingerbread Cookie Donuts that are lazily frosted with only a smattering of cookie pieces, do not buy. The cookie pieces won’t be enough to mask the fact that it’s a plain yeast donut underneath. A spiced cake donut would have been the ideal way to deliver sufficient gingerbread.
My gingerbread cookie pieces weren’t too soft or too stale, but I can pretty much guarantee you that people will encounter this. A lot of it depends on how long the donut has been sitting there waiting to meet its Maker.
Don’t be afraid to call out the exact donut you want Babe Ruth style – I do it all the time.
Burning Questions:
- You carry a baseball bat with you into Dunkin’ Donuts? That’s not what I meant.
- Do all the Dunkin Donuts employees hate you? Yes.
- What are Dunkin’s holiday coffee flavors this year? Brown Sugar Cinnamon & Peppermint Mocha
