Whats better than waffles & syrup?

Waffles & chocolate, probably…

Hershey’s Waffle Layer Crunch

Hershey's Waffle Layer Crunch

Way back in December 2016, Hershey’s released what it was calling its most anticipated product in over 16 years (based on consumer testing scores, and some overconfidence): Hershey’s Cookie Layer Crunch Bars.

The candy bars combined Hershey’s chocolate with crunchy cookie bits and decadent fillings in Mint, Vanilla Creme, and Caramel, and later Triple Chocolate and Cookies ‘N’ Creme variants.

While I gave them a generally favorable review at the time, I must admit: I haven’t bought any of them since. They seem to lack a certain “X Factor” that incites me to repurchase them.

But nothing screams “X Factor” like “there’s an ice cream cone in my candy bar.”

Hershey’s Strawberry Waffle Layer Crunch

But before I even get to the waffles, let’s talk about this strawberry cream! It’s very satisfying and completely non-medicinal – a problem that plagues many artificial strawberries. It’s part strawberry milk and part strawberry ice cream… perhaps a strawberry ice cream made with strawberry milk. The Hershey’s milk chocolate is still the leading flavor by a long shot, but this fruity cream is a strong complement.

Onto the waffle cone pieces, which are also a solid complement for a cream that tastes a little like ice cream. Functionally, they’re not that different than the cookie pieces in the normal lineup, but their subtle yet distinct taste creeps on you and becomes recognizable as waffle cone if you pay any attention at all, instead of mindlessly shoveling candy down your gullet.

Their novelty also makes them more fun.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Hershey’s Dulce de Leche Waffle Layer Crunch

Hershey's Dulce de Leche Waffle Layer Crunch

The Dulce de Leche flavor is much weaker than the strawberry one. In fact, I thought it tasted more like vanilla before I started to pick out some light, caramel-y notes hiding underneath it all. The creme has a hard time standing out against the Hershey’s milk chocolate, which ultimately renders it kind of boring.

The cone pieces don’t generate enough interest by themselves either.

Rating: 6 out of 10

Burning Questions:

  1. So is the waffle cone the “X Factor”? Kind of.
  2. Will you buy either of these again? Strawberry likely, Dulce de Leche never.
  3. What’s your favorite way to eat waffles? Naked.
