They’re baaaack! And quite frankly, they should have never left in the first place…
Kellogg’s Gone Nutty! Pop Tarts
Kellogg’s went nutty when it discontinued Gone Nutty! Pop Tarts not all that long ago. Their initial release came five years ago in 2013, pre-dating Junk Banter’s existence by two years. I never reviewed them because I just assumed everyone already knew how good they were.
Apparently not…
I can’t say for sure why Kellogg’s decided to discontinue the Gone Nutty! line. It’s easy to assign blame to Kellogg’s for the move, but I find it hard to believe they would cast any money-makers aside so unceremoniously. For the truth, sometimes you have to look at the idiot in the mirror.
Oh, not my mirror of course; Heavens, no… I bought plenty of them.
The idiot in the mirror is you.
I highly suspect Kellogg’s pulled the plug because they simply weren’t selling. But bringing them back so soon after their discontinuation suggests enough people clamored for a return – much like the Strawberry Milkshake Pop Tarts that returned earlier this year.
It’s just like they say… distance makes the heart grow fatter.
Kellogg’s Gone Nutty! Peanut Butter Pop Tarts
The “straightforward” one is the Kellogg’s Gone Nutty! Peanut Butter Pop Tart. This is an unfrosted Pop Tart, which would normally be underwhelming to me, but these are a peanut butter lover’s dream breakfast.
And I put straightforward in quotations because these are more accurately peanut butter cookie flavored. The sprinkled sugar atop these Pop Tarts make them far more delicious than pure pastry dough with peanut butter filling. Even untoasted, these are delicious – sweet & salty with a slight edge to salty because of the dough, but with sufficiently sweet filling made with real peanut butter.
And don’t even worried about how they taste toasted, because everyone knows warm cookies > lukewarm cookies.
Burning Questions:
- Do these use real peanut butter? Yes.
- I’m allergic to peanuts. Should I buy these? No.
- What flavor is this? Peanut butter.

Kellogg’s Gone Nutty! Chocolate Peanut Butter Pop Tarts
Can somebody say, “Reese’s Pop Tarts?!”
These are the ones I remember loving most, and I still do. Kellogg’s Gone Nutty! Chocolate Peanut Butter Pop Tarts have a cocoa-based dough with the peanut butter filling and a chocolate frosting. I love love love this combination straight out of the package. The peanut butter pops, and the chocolate is a natural complement.
This might sound strange, but when toasted these remind me a lot of the S’mores Pop Tarts but with the marshmallow swapped out for peanut butter. I’m very okay with that, you guys.
The only caution is to be careful when toasting these. If you over do it, the peanut butter flavor fades in favor of burnt chocolate.
In other words, learn to use your toaster properly.
Burning Questions:
- What kind of toaster do you recommend? Any will work.
- Yeah but what kind do you have? A regular one.
- Can I have your toaster? Ugh, fine.

I’ve gone nutty for the unfrosted version as well. Maybe these would sell better if they were marketed as Peanut Butter Cookie because, you’re right, that is exactly what they taste like.
The frosting on the chocolate version is good, but I feel it masks more than complements the filling. The chocolate pastry is superior to the standard cardboard one has to cut off to get to the good stuff. That said, it still pales in comparison to the fantastic but plain unfrosted pastry.
So agree to disagree on a high rating for the chocolate, but we are two peanuts in a shell on the rectangular peanut butter cookie flavor.
