REVIEW: Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection

I know Christmas is behind us, and I know you’re sick of peppermint, but Ho-Ho-Holy Shit, people! It’s about freakin’ time we get some peppermint in our Greek yogurt. I’ve been waiting for something like this for years. The yogurt aisle is just a constantly-percolating hurricane of new flavors, limited edition releases, and new brands altogether. And yet somehow we haven’t had any peppermint yogurt varieties by any major brands to date. I search with optimism every single holiday season but to no avail. Perhaps peppermint just doesn’t work well in tangy yogurt and companies haven’t brought it to production?

I no longer have to ponder. Miraculously on 34th street, Chobani released this new Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection just before Christmas.

  Chobani Peppermint Perfection

Now, now… it’s not exactly the product I was hoping for. The base here is vanilla yogurt and not peppermint, but it will have to do.

Here’s the exact description of Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection: “Vanilla Low-Fat Yogurt with Dark Chocolate Cookies, Dark Chocolate, and Peppermint White Chocolate Chunks.” Okay, that actually sounds even better than the product I was hoping for. Chobani took their healthy Greek yogurt (of the 1.5% milkfat variety) and dumped in all the candy you would find in your Christmas Stocking… peppermint bark, chocolate, and cookies. Gotta assume Chobani consulted Santa’s fat ass when they developed Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection.

Chobani Peppermint Perfection

I haven’t had any Chobani Flips since Pumpkin Harvest Crisp, which was downright delicious. If you’re unfamiliar, the Flip line takes creamy Chobani Greek Yogurt and pairs them with crunchy toppings that take it from a healthy product to straight junk food. I eat a lot of yogurt, but I generally stick to cleaner versions. Just so you know upfront, Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection is 200 calories (not terrible) with 20g of sugar (terrible). But tis the season for not looking at nutrition labels (all year), so enough of that noise. I wanted peppermint in my yogurt and I’m damn well going to have it.

If you’ve never had Chobani’s Vanilla Greek yogurt, then you obviously don’t eat a lot of Greek yogurt. It’s one of their flagship offerings and features a smooth vanilla flavor (not a bold one) whose sweetness does a great job of taming that “tang” element that Greek yogurts often carry with them. In the way of texture, it’s a little more runny than some other Greek yogurts I enjoy, such as Dannon Oikos Triple Zero (my personal favorite brand). I have no glaring complaints with Chobani Vanilla other than it not being peppermint.

Dumping in the topping is when the party starts. Unfortunately, peppermint declined the invitation. For a product titled Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection, there are way more dark chocolate cookies and pieces in here than peppermint white chocolate ones. I won’t say the peppermint presence isn’t present, but it’s very mild. Too mild for my liking. Even the minty chunks are mellowed big time by the creamy white chocolate through which they’re delivered. The textures are just fine – crunchy cookies and candy inside of a creamy yogurt. The dark chocolate chunks might be the star of all the toppings as I think it’s the feature flavor.

Bottom line: Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection tastes good enough- of course it does. The combination of vanilla and chocolate is a safe pairing, and there’s cookies and candies in it. But Chobani Flip Peppermint Perfection isn’t close to perfection, and it’s barely even peppermint.

Better luck next year.
