The Cereal “Circle of Life” has stopped on “Fruity” for Lucky Charms…
General Mills Fruity Lucky Charms
It seems inevitable, really. Most top-selling cereals with a relatively neutral canvas will go through several variations during their life cycles. The variations occur in no particular order and for varying lengths of time, but they’re usually the same variations that come and go.
Allow me to demonstrate with Post’s Pebbles, though a journey through Cheerios would paint a similar picture.
Due to limited PowerPoint ability, kindly ignore that the “Cereal Circle of Life” isn’t a circle:
Chocolate, Fruit, Marshmallows, Cinnamon, and Peanut Butter: the Cereal Quinfecta.
Of course the road through Pebbles also included quite a few detours along the way…
Lucky Charms has already graced us with Marshmallow (regular), Chocolate, Cinnamon Vanilla, and now we circle back to Fruity for the second time in its lifetime.
See: Berry Lucky Charms, introduced in 2006.
WELP, these taste like Trix!
No doubt about it, the question of “which fruit does Fruity Lucky Charms taste like” is answered immediately, and the answer is Trixberry – that nondescript, tart, artificial fruit flavor that is good as a children’s cereal but kinda gross under any other lens.
The resemblance is uncanny, but I don’t know how I feel about it…
You see, I’m just not sure that Fruity Lucky Charms is something I need in my life. I always loved Lucky Charms as an alternative to the fruity cereals like Fruity Pebbles and Froot Loops and even the Trix which these tastes an awful lot like. And my love of Lucky Charms isn’t rooted solely in the abundance of marshmallows; I actually think the sweet, glazed oat pieces are critical to the success of Lucky Charms.
The fruity flavor of the cereal pieces have such distinct flavor that it overpowers the marshmallows instead of complementing them. It’s just a little disjointed and likely a fault of this particular fruit’s flavor, since I know I actually enjoyed the Marshmallow Fruity Pebbles while not really caring for these.
Yeah… it’s not gross, but I don’t need Fruity Lucky Charms in my life…
PEANUT BUTTER Lucky Charms, however…
Burning Questions:
- OMG Fluffnutter Lucky Charms! I KNOW!
- Which Lucky Charms marshmallow is the best? The rainbows, without question.
- Why is it the best? Without question…

Certainly there is a PhD thesis or two yet to be written on The Cereal Circle of Life
I didn’t realize it until now, but I definitely need peanut butter lucky charms in my life!
