We’ve all heard of the “cherry on top,” but have you ever heard of “marshmallow on top”?
If you’re thinking to yourself, “Yes, they call it a hot cocoa, you idiot”, then listen up, jackass! Because Reese’s calls it something different.
Reese’s Mallow-Top Peanut Butter Cups
Introducing new Reese’s Mallow-Top Peanut Butter Cups, new this year through the Easter holiday season. The new cups have a layer of marshmallow flavored creme on top of the milk chocolate, both surrounding the usual peanut butter creme. This is the second time Reese’s have experimented with marshmallow in some capacity as a limited edition Reese’s with Marshmallow was introduced about 15 years ago, when nobody knew that weird candy existed because we were all too busy trying to figure out Twitter.
I never had the prior version, but pictures from this review from Candyblog.net reveal a stretchy marshmallow layer on bottom. In the new formulation, the marshmallow-flavored creme has the same texture as the milk chocolate shell. I think I would prefer some actual marshmallow here, but I can’t write off the new Reese’s Mallow-Top because peanut butter + marshmallow = success in almost all circumstances.
As soon as you tear into the package, you’re greeted with a wonderful scent that pairs the familiar chocolate and peanut butter with a new vanilla-like sweetness that gets you salivating in a hurry.
And it didn’t take me long to figure out exactly what this smells like, and tastes like…
Lucky Charms marshmallows! If you were to mix a bowl of Reese’s Puffs and Lucky Charms, it would probably taste pretty similar to these Reese’s Mallow-Tops. That’s because the marshmallow flavor is very much like the unmistakable one of Lucky Charms marshmallows (candy-sweet and delicious). No doubt this tastes better because of the real chocolate and peanut butter, but if you’re trying to imagine what these taste like, that visual will get you most of the way there.
Another good gauge on whether or not you’re going to like these is how much you liked or disliked the Witch’s Brew Kit Kats last Halloween. This is the same company and I’m sure it’s the same Marshmallow Creme.
The only question remaining is if it pairs well with peanut butter, and the only answer is of course it does. While I wouldn’t prefer this over a regular Reese’s, it a nice change of pace and perfectly fitting seasonal product worthy of an Easter basket. Sweeter than a regular or White Chocolate Reese’s for sure.
I still think they should do Mallow-in-the-Middle, but these are a delightful treat regardless.
Burning Questions:
- Mallow-in-the-Middle… wasn’t that a TV show? No, you’re thinking of Malcolm in-the Middle.
- Oh yeah. With Macaulay Culkin. No, Frankie Muniz.
- Right! The Dad was Phil Hartman. BRYAN CRANSTON.
