When you really stop and think about it, there may not be a greater choice of ice cream than Neapolitan. Long a lifeline for the indecisive, Neapolitan ice cream speaks to me on a number of different levels. I like that it has:
- Chocolate (because I’m fat.)
- Vanilla (because I’m boring.)
- Strawberry (because I like to pretend I’m healthy sometimes.)
But when you combine these three things with Oreo?! I’ve never felt more seen…
Nabisco Neapolitan Oreos
Oh yes, the hottest thing in ice cream right now is an Oreo! The new Neapolitan Oreos play with ice cream in so many ways. It’s Neapolitan of course, but it’s also cookies and cream AND it introduces a brand new WAFFLE CONE-FLAVORED COOKIE! Eat it with some ice cream and I’m pretty sure you just morph into a walking, talking ice cream sundae.
The new Neapolitan Oreos run back a concept it introduced more than a decade ago.
So what else has changed in a decade? Well aside from the waffle cone cookie, COVID, and the fact that nobody can afford anything anymore, the revamped Neapolitan Oreo features three cremes instead of the prior’s two. All three of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are sandwiched between two wafers, and the middle wafer from the “Triple Double” version has been ditched.
Speaking of the wafers, let’s start with that new waffle cone wafer. The million dollar question is whether or not it tastes like a waffle cone, and the best I can offer is only: “kind of.” Nabisco made a peculiar choice to add cinnamon to the wafer. I’m not sure it’s enough to make it NOT taste like a waffle cone, but I’m positive it doesn’t help.
It does however taste great, and when combined with the triple layers of ice cream-themed fillings, the total package does work wonderfully.
You know what the vanilla creme tastes like because it’s the classic one. The chocolate appears to be one of their darker ones – probably the same as in Dark Chocolate Oreos, which is an upgrade over the original Chocolate Oreos’ creme. And finally, the strawberry creme is absent any of the strong medicinal flavors that have plagued some strawberry-flavored Oreos of the past. The combination truly reminds me of a big bowl of Neapolitan ice cream, making this new version of Neapolitan Oreos a gigantic upgrade over the formula released over a decade ago.
Also it’s really really hot outside and this is ice cream so it’s okay to eat the whole package to cool off and I don’t want to hear anything suggesting otherwise and also, shut up.
Burning Questions:
- Have you seen gas prices lately? I can’t afford to drive to the store and get these. I hear ya.
- Then how did you get them? I walked.
- It’s too hot and I’m too fat to walk. I hear ya.
