Coworkers… don’t you just hate ’em?
Coworkers exist for one reason and one reason only: to sell me Girl Scout cookies for their daughters’ stupid fundraiser. For 364 days out of the year, I feign friendliness towards coworkers so that they remember to ask me if I want cookies. Leap years are the best, because it’s one less day annually I have to talk to them.
This year, I don’t have to talk to them at all.
At least that’s the hope! General Mills just released two new cereals: Girl Scouts Caramel Crunch cereal and Girl Scouts Thin Mints cereal. These cereals are readily available at stores like Target and do not require that I look my coworkers in the face. What’s more, I can hit the self-checkout and avoid human interaction altogether.
The Thin Mints cereal was really good, but Samoas/Caramel deLites are my favorite Girl Scout cookie. Yes, I like them even better than the Peanut Butter Patty/Tagalong cookies. If this Caramel Crunch cereal can do my favorite cookie justice, I get to lock myself in my office and eat cereal for the rest of 2017.
I will do no actual work this year.
General Mills Girl Scouts Caramel Crunch makes no mention of the coconut or chocolate, but they’ve stamped a picture of the Samoa/Caramel deLite on the front. These cereal pieces look like miniature donuts more than the popular cookie.
Caramel and brown sugar are the sharpest flavors in Girl Scouts Caramel Crunch. The cereal pieces are large and pillowy, but they have an impressively tight snap when you bite into them. The pieces are glazed with caramel syrup and provide good flavor even if it’s not breaking new ground. They also have a smattering of cocoa powder that adds a very subtle nuance to the caramel. The best way I can describe it with existing products is Honey Nut Cheerios meets Cocoa Puffs. Something like that.
The disappointing part was the coconut or lack thereof. Coconut is perhaps the most distinctive flavor in the Samoa/Caramel deLite trio, and this cereal pretty much ignores it. I thought I tasted it for a second, but it was fleeting.
All I tasted was corn when I first tried Girl Scouts Caramel Crunch in milk – remind me not to buy Corn Cookies if the Scouts ever make them. The caramel flavor returns proudly after you chew for a bit. I now understand why they focused only on caramel when they named it Caramel Crunch; they ain’t lyin’. The chocolate flavor fades and the coconut is still on a milk carton somewhere. But thankfully, the caramel flavor is even sweeter with dairy and it’s objectively enjoyable. The cereal also refuses to get soggy, earning it the Perseverance Badge or whatever dumb shit those girls give each other to boost self-esteem.
Samoa/Caramel deLite fans, lower your expectations now. Girl Scouts Caramel Crunch is a good breakfast cereal but it won’t exactly satisfy that cookie craving. Bummer…
I knew I shouldn’t have told my boss to f*ck off for the rest of the year.
