The Girl Scouts cooking-selling season is about to begin in earnest, while the “Diet Starts 2018” season began on January 2nd.
What a perfect time for the Girl Scouts Cookie Cereals!
You’ll have to forgive my excitement; I’ve been waiting for this day for months. General Mills made headlines with a very weird segment of the population last year when it announced its first new cereals for 2017: Girl Scouts Thin Mints Cereal and Girl Scouts Caramel Crunch cereals.
Other than me, nobody was more excited than this guy:
With the enthusiasm of a late-night informercial, he reviews the Girl Scouts Thin Mints cereal three months before he’s even tried it and says it will no doubt taste just like the Scouts’ most popular cookie: Thin Mints.
Junk Banter follows up tonight.
General Mills Girl Scouts Thin Mints cereal continues a hilarious trend in 2017. While most companies are focusing on making their cereals healthier by removing all the good stuff, Kellogg’s first bucked the trend by adding real chocolate chip cookies into its Keebler Cereal. In an apparent “f*ck you” to Kellogg’s, General Mills just shrunk down some cookies and stuffed them in a box.
Girl Scouts Thin Mints Cereal have a promising peppermint scent when you open the box. Gotta admit that I’m a little trepidatious about this. Usually I brush my teeth after I eat my breakfast – not during it.
Thankfully, the miniature cookie-shaped discs are dusted with cocoa. The chocolate flavor has an adequate sugary sweetness to balance the mint. The chocolate is more poignant than the mint – a reversal from real Thin Mint cookies. I’m confident this was the right call for cereal. Its crunchy texture does a good job approximating the airy, cracker-like inside of a Thin Mint.
Though delicious, let me make one point to keep expectations reasonable. Cereal chocolate will never quite do actual chocolate justice; not even the cheap chocolate on a Thin Mint cookie. The flavor of corn cereal emerges at the end, making these taste like Cocoa Puffs with a peppermint kick.
Milk changes the flavor profile of Girl Scouts Thin Mints cereal only slightly. I thought the mint’s punch weakened but the overall sweetness was enhanced. I can’t really say the cereal improved nor did it decline, but I can say I enjoyed it thoroughly. Chocolate mints cereals are hard to come by in that they didn’t exist until right now. This is a refreshing flavor and it adds to the cereal’s novelty.
In summary, General Mills deserves the “Fatass Appreciation” Award for their new cookie-cereal hybrid.
