Welp, somebody give these girls the Resiliency Badge…
Unfazed by a review where I ripped them to shreds, the Girl Scouts are back at it with their second attempt at s’mores.
The new-for-2017 Girl Scout S’mores cookies also come in this sandwich version. I think second chances is one of the values the Scouts preach, but that’s not why I’m doing this. I’m just hungry…
The shitty version of Girl Scout S’mores cookies were merely graham cookies covered in chocolate. The “marshmallow layer” was barely visible to the eye and absolutely invisible to the taste buds. But these suckers? These feature two crunchy graham flavored cookies with a creamy chocolate and a creamy marshmallow filling in the center.
At least there better be marshmallow… otherwise the Scouts may soon earn the “Dealing with Difficult People” Badge.
And persistence prevails! This is a much better product.
Where to start? The graham cookies are a stronger foundation; they’re thicker and more flavorful than the thin, flaky, cracker-like nonsense in the other one. These chew like a good biscuit cookie. The graham flavor here is mild but definitely present. The cookies are slightly buttery and have the word “s’mores” printed right on them. That alone makes them more “s’mores” than the first attempt.
And somebody give these girls the Marshmallow Badge! A creamy vanilla sweetness greeted me when I bit into the cookie. Of course it’s not perfectly marshmallow, but at least this element wasn’t ignored completely. The chocolate layer reminded me of the one stuffed inside the E.L. Fudge cookies. Not exactly gourmet either, but it’s important to remember this: these girls are like, seven years old. The two cremes combine with the graham-ish cookies to create a satisfying cookie.
The Girl Scouts’ S’mores sandwich version is no doubt a better attempt than the first. I recommend these as worth a try. However, they don’t rank up there with classics like Thin Mints, Samoa/Caramel deLites, and Tagalongs/Peanut Butter Patties. I think an even better formula would take the Tagalong/Peanut Butter Patties model and replace the peanut butter with a soft graham layer and a fluffy marshmallow layer.
Somebody let me into the Girl Scouts so I can control all the cookies.
