According to a recent study by food-blogging idiots who wrote this article, 9 out of 10 caramel apples are sick and tired of this shit. Pumpkin spice has stolen all the attention. Apples, just like pumpkins, are everywhere in the fall. Apple-picking at the orchard is arguably more fun than picking the perfect pumpkin at the patch. In Scenario A, you end up baking a delicious apple pie. In Scenario B, you try to carve a pumpkin but end up with this. Apples even put on sexy caramel lingerie to try and look good for us, but we still overlook them.
Caramel apples have now teamed up with Hershey’s to command our attention. It worked.
Hershey’s Caramel Apple Filled Milk Chocolate have arrived. The product is a first for Hershey’s. They roll out Hershey Kisses Pumpkin Spice every year, but have yet to tackle caramel apple in any capacity to the best of my knowledge (Note: I am in no way knowledgeable). Maybe it’s their counter to Mars’ Caramel Apple Milky Way? Throwing milk chocolate into the mix is a surefire way to make me interested in caramel apples again. They could have REALLY commanded my attention with pumpkin spice caramel apple, but I’m pretty certain the two flavors hate each other.
Hershey’s Caramel Apple Filled Milk Chocolate come in a bag of individually wrapped, apple-shaped milk chocolate candies. They also look like butts, my favorite thing about them. As the description suggests, the outside milk chocolate exterior isn’t flavored with anything. It’s the same crisp milk chocolate with moderate sweetness that you find in the standard Hershey’s bar, but with the density that I equate with most chocolate Easter bunnies. It’s good enough to satisfy without any major complaints.
Hershey’s Caramel Apple Filled Milk Chocolate candies contain a LOT of filling, and this wasn’t the right choice. The apple flavor is stronger than the native caramel flavor but both are players here. The apple is slightly tart & sour; definitely more genuine than in the Caramel Apple Milky Way. But it’s something about the ratios that are extremely off-putting to me. The order of flavors goes apple > caramel > milk chocolate, and they just don’t combine seamlessly at all. Perhaps the absence of nougat from the Caramel Apple Milky Way exposes this awful truth.
Giving credit where credit is due, the crispy milk chocolate outside gives way to a soft, buttery caramel filling that successfully features the advertised flavor. It’s called “Hershey’s Caramel Apple” for a reason. You get what you pay for, I guess…
Too bad I hate it.
In summary, you’re not pumpkin spice and you never will be.
