What’s that old expression, “An Oatmeal Creme Pie a Day Keeps the Doctor Away?”
I sure as hell hope so, because these new Little Debbie Caramel Apple Oatmeal Creme Pies look ?. Debbie has done apple before, she’s done caramel before, but never the two together. ‘Tis the season to get weird, Debbie!
This is the first time the classic Oatmeal Creme Pie has received a makeover. Combining the oatmeal cookie with caramel apples is a decision my fat ass approves. The best-tasting fruits are the ones overshadowed entirely by the candy, cookies, and pies they’re served with. This snack has it all!
The entire package smells like apple cinnamon oatmeal, so that’s pretty cool. And can we give the little cake genius her due on these soft oatmeal cookies? They taste just as an oatmeal cookie should. The recipe on the oatmeal cookies is untouched. The cookies offer the wholesome flavor of whole grain oats, seasoned with cinnamon and a touch of sugar. They’re the perfect texture to hold the creme filling in these little sucrose sandwiches.
All the fall stuff happens in the middle, and does it ever! The filling of has apple & caramel as two separate components. You’ll notice the apple first. It comes via this sticky brown goo that’s made with real dried apples. It’s syrupy and tastes like a combination of apple butter and raisins. The apple is genuine and the flavor of the raisins is a natural fit for the outer oatmeal cookie.
The caramel component is a consistency more typical of Little Debbie Creme Pies: light and fluffy. The caramel isn’t the most intense flavor, but it’s in the right realm at least. The caramel notes are much more obvious in the bites where you miss the apple entirely, and you will on occasion. It introduces an element of saltiness absent in the standard creme pie, where the filling is simply sugar for days. I can’t tell you enough how much I want to stop typing the phrase “creme pies.”
Honestly, there are only minor criticisms to offer here. The primary one is that I sometimes experienced the flavors intermittently instead of harmoniously. Some bites were just oatmeal & apple; others were just oatmeal and caramel. But each flavor is executed well for a snack cake that runs just over a 27 cents per cake. Take bigger bites and my criticism is mitigated entirely.
The fall flavors achieved in Little Debbie’s Caramel Apple Oatmeal Creme Pies are charming and admirable. Sexy, even…
In summary, you could say I’m falling for Little Debbie.
